Adding exterior garage lights

Hello all. I'm new to this site and I just bought my first home recently, and as expected, my DIY list has begun. Currently, I only have one exterior light by my front door and no lights on the sides of my garage door. Can anyone point me towards a "How-To", or share any tips/advice on how I can do this? While I have a basic knowledge, and a little experience with electrical work(i.e. Replacing existing outlets, light fixtures and ceiling fans), I haven't done anything that involved connecting additional wiring to existing items.
