Charred Components in Rear Panel of Range
Attachment 37479 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/electric-large-kitchen-home-appliances/37479-charred-components-rear-panel-range-download21.jpg)Hi DIY'ers-
My wife was set to bake a delicious Labor Day Weekend pork roast when our 12 year old Whirlpool range, model RF386PXG, began throwing error codes. The codes, E1-F5 indicated a bad latch switch. I confirmed the issue by removing the rear cover. I'm not worried about the diagnosis.
I am concerned, however, that the latch switch appears burnt, as does the oven light socket, a cable connector and several wires. I've included a picture of the damaged components.
Questions:
How would these devices and wires have gotten burnt? Should I be concerned about it? Is the anything to do to prevent further damage? Should I replace the damaged components? Can I simply replace the latch switch and be done with it?

Looking for part for drawer slide
I'm not sure if this is the right section for this post so please direct me if you know of a better place.
My kitchen cabinets use all DTC under-mount drawer slides and hinges. Its a Chinese company and the drawer slides have been working very well for the past five years until just recently. It seems the "catch" on three drawer slides have broken. Cheap plastic. It's the blue piece in the center of the image below. Naturally, I'm having a hard time finding a suitable replacement piece. I can replace the entire drawer slide with Blum brand slides, but with three drawers already needing replacement and more to come in the foreseeable future, it seems like a waste of money to replace otherwise fine slides just because of a small plastic part.
Please take a look at the picture and see if anyone can guide me in the right direction.
Thank You
Easiest/Fastest way to move bathtub drain by 3 inches
I'm almost done with my masterbath renovation. Tiles, drywall, paint, all done. The next step is to drop in the bathtub. To my horror the drain is almost 3 inches from where it should be . I traced back the issue to inaccurate drawings provided by Duravit. You pay extra for a fancy bathtub and the drawing is way off but just on the drain position :wall:. I double-checked all dimensions when the bathtub was delivered and standing in my garage but the drain offset was a difficult one because of all the angles. I did not want to bring the tub through the stairs all the way to the 2nd floor for a test fit as the drawings looked accurate on all dimensions I could measure quickly with confidence. That was a mistake but what is done is done.
I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest/fastest way to reposition the drain by ~ 3 inches. The new part of the drain is made of PVC and connects after the trap with a rubber clamp to the old ABS drain. I have ~1.4 inches of plywood on the floor under the bathtub (5/8 subfloor + additional 3/4 inch marine ply). On the other side of the floor, downstairs, we have the drywall ceiling of our dining room. That could be a pain to refinish nicely based on the natural light in that room and the open floor plan meaning that if one cannot feather in the paint nicely, one would have to repaint the ceiling on most of the 1st floor to make it look right. Hence, I'm leaning towards attacking the problem from the top and opening the floor.
Is that the wise choice? How big of a hole do I need? Any better options?
Thank you so much,

Motion Sensor Flood Light - Hardwiring acceptable?
I wanted to install a motion sensor flood light (activates if someone were to enter the back yard through the fence door on side of house) and don't want it to be switched (meaning it will always work if dark).
Is there any code violation if I were to hard wire this to a single receptacle circuit in the attic (garage door opener ceiling receptacle) without a switch or are all lights required to be switched?

Compressors at 8000 Feet
I have purchased a small Bostich pancake compressor and a cheap two barrel compressor at different times over the past 5 years. They work fine in Oklahoma were I first used them. We moved to New Mexico up in the mountains, near the 8,000 foot elevation. These two compressors will not pump up to their cut off pressure in the high altitudes. Do the Husky compressors or any other compressor at the big box stores work at 8,000 feet?
Will this kitchen sink drain piping work in my 1920 house? See pix/diagram (pdf)
Hi,
I've already built this, but before I seal it up (!!!) , will this kitchen drain piping work? Specifically is the horizontal (it is level) section problematic? Is no venting a problem?
Detail:
I have a house built in 1920 with a cast iron kitchen drain whose horizontal section leaked into my basement. Black mold, etc... So I busted the old tiled concrete wall, http://www.netdevi.com/kitchen drain plumbing.pdftook out the old piping and replaced it with PVC. There is a dishwasher also connected. See picture / diagram.
Would much appreciate feedback/direction.

1x8 instead of plywood deck
I have an old house. The decking of the roof is 1x8 boards (maybe they are 1x6 not 100%), however, it is not larger pieces of plywood like you would see on a modern home.

Im trying to figure out if that is wrong. Should the boards have been covered with plywood?

Vibration from garage door opener?
I was in a high end home yesterday doing some work in one of the children's bedroom when I felt, and heard this strange noise. Note the bedroom is directly above the two car garage.
I was on my hands and knees assembling a bed I had just repaired, when all of a sudden the floor rumbled, and a grumbling noise got my attention. I said to the home owner "WHAT'S THAT", she said the garage door opener.
I will be back in the home next week, and wonder if there is a way to INSULATE the unit so as to prevent the vibration transfer? I haven't looked at the mounting brackets yet, but wanted to ask for help B4 I return.

Wireless light switches??
Soliciting advice and opinion:
I have a back porch the width of my house. Walls are brick, ceiling is nice old beadboard. Don't want to get to invasive for something simple.
On one end of the porch, I have a light fixture. I'd like a like a light fixture over the other half of the porch, which is the seating area. I don't mind running a discreet cable from the existing light to the new light, but don't really want to then run a cable to a switch, which would require conduit, etc. And would prefer not to have a pull string dangling either.
What about a wireless light switch? I've seen them on the shelves at the hardware store. Seems like a good solution.

Drain flies in jacuzzi bathtub
We've lived in this house for about 8 years and have used the jacuzzi tub...maybe 3 times when we first moved in. Once we realized what a pain it was to fill and that the hot water ran out before the thing got full, we stopped using it. Now all it does is collect dust and drain flies. It used to be very occasional, but we're being besieged with them right now.
I removed the drain a few months ago when we had trouble with the tub draining slowly (have to wash out that dust every now and then) and discovered that the pipes looked like they were put in yesterday: completely white and clean (plastic). So that made me realize that it was probably our shower which is right next to the tub that had the drain problem and it was somehow affecting the tub. Put Drano in the shower--since taking the metal plate off the shower drain still didn't allow me much access as far as cleaning.
I now have a rather fine hair catcher on the shower drain, while the tub drain is fully closed and I put saran wrap over the tub spigot. The drain flies are still all over the tub, so we've concluded they're coming out of the holes for the jet spray.
HOW IN THE WORLD do we find where they're breeding? We have no way to get to the insides of the jacuzzi tub.
And while I'm on the subject, could anyone tell me how expensive/difficult it would be to replace this tub with an old-fashioned, usable bathtub? The space seems too wide for a normal tub. I'd install a bigger shower if we didn't have a window over the tub. I'll see if I can attach a photo of the setup.

Ext Motion Flood Light (New) - 1 light not working???
I recently replaced all my exterior motion sensor flood lights. The old lights worked fine other then the senors were going out. So you know, all light installed locations are under eave with a electrical box and standard wire already run to each location. All wires were in good condition. New lights were installed with proper size wire nuts and secured with electrical tape.
The front driveway light was installed and works fine. This light is a different brand from the backyard lights.
Backyard flood light (1) installed easily and works fine. Backyard flood light (2) installed easily BUT only one of the bulbs came on.:confused:
I replaced flood light (2) with another new light and the same problem occurred. I swapped the bulbs (ALL new) showing me the bulbs were not the issue. :wall:
One difference between both backyard flood lights is (1) has 4 wires (2 blk, 2 wht) where (2) has only 2 wires. My thought is one of (1) pairs runs to (2).
How to remove Hammer Finish from aluminum

ceiling fan wiring going wrong?
I have a ceiling fan that I installed a couple years ago. Fan worked ok except the lights would always stay on. Decided that I wanted to run a new wireless switch. Pulled the fan down and ran the new wireless control box (last fan had on but they would not work together). I installed the new wall box but it only has a ground wire. The wiring from the the wall switch has a red wire going to the switch and a black wire. I pulled the ceiling fan down again (getting really old and heavy by now) and did not find a red wire but a Blue wire. I capped off the blue wire when I hung the fan the first time because I was not called for. I also have a brown wire up there. So in the ceiling I have a black, white, blue, and brown. Well the fan is not working at all now. No lights or fan. What wires should I hook up? All the white wire and black wires a wire tied together. I made sure the ground was attached. It is like when I unhooked the red wire I lost power to the fan. Should I hook the blue wire up to the white in the ceiling? (it does have power). Just would like to get this working again and would really like the wall switch over a handheld remote. Also this fan does not have any chains.

Phone not working, no dial tone, connection box in laundry room
Hello, I am new to the forums.
Last night my landline phone went out. There is no dial tone on any of the phones. This morning I checked and still, no dial tone. We do have internet and TV though.
In the back of the laundry room, right at the top of the wall below the ceiling, there is a small box with a plastic cover that says "BELL SYSTEM". Underneath that cover are a bunch of phone wire connections. I thought that maybe one of the wires has come undone so i spent all morning trying different wire combinations, but still it isn't working. Please help! My mom has called the Comcast guy to come out on Tues and have a look, so if I can't fix it today, I'm not really worried.Pictures of the connection box:

smart phone and plan
Hello
I am interested in the Nokia Lumia Icon.
I am also trying to weigh the pros and cons of plans.
if I buy the phone outright then go to a carrier for activation with no contract would that be a viable way to do this?
I would get 1 GB data as this phone really gets WI FI quite good and I am in the DC area.
I would also look for free voice and text.
I can't seem to coordinate this with carriers as each is trying to get in my pocket.
I do realize the phone is expensive but with insurance I would think that once the initial obligation is out of the way I have more flexibility and I have to pay for the phone sooner or later.
Am I on the right path?

Water starts out high pressure, then completely drops.
I could find anything quite like the problem that I'm having so I went a head and made a new thread instead. Any ways me and my fiancé just moved into this house, it's a rental house out in the country. We get our water from a well. Our problem is ever since we have been living here is that when we first turn on the water we have the pressure coming out of the facet what is expected and seconds later it just plummets to a trickle. I went out to the pump house to check it out. He pressure gauge was still reason 35 psi. Turned on the water hose that was hooked right off the pressure tank and it had tons of pressure still. You could watch it pull the rest of the pressure down to about 25, well pump would kick on and pressure would go back up to 55-58psi. Talked to the land lord, he had some one come out and confirm that that was working properly. He said it was. Only thing I've done different to the house is put a different filter base and filters in. Culligan filters, I believe it's a 5 micron filter. Just replaced it last night again and it seemed to make things worse. Almost had no pressure at the house when the gauge in the pump house said 45psi. Do I have a restriction some where between the house and the pump house? The line goes underground into the basement, and that's where I have the filter. I was starting to wonder if a 5 micron filter is to much for this system, maybe causing to much of a restriction? Considered getting a 20 or 30 micron instead. Need some advice. Cant do much with the water the way it is. Thank you!

Can I Use the Honeywell Econoswitch Programmable Light Switch (RPLS740B)?
Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum and an absolute noob when it comes to doing anything involving electrical. I will very likely hire an electrician to install the Honeywell Econoswitch (RPLS740B). But first, before I even start making phones call, I thought I'd ask if my setup will even accommodate this particular switch. I've attached a photo. The top switch controls my outdoor front porch light and light attached to my garage. The bottom switch controls my indoor entryway light. I'd like to have these lights controlled by the Honeywell, if possible.
If anyone can let me know based on this photo if using this switch is even an option, I'd appreciate it. I also realize there's a lot more that needs to be known underneath it all to know for sure. Thanks for any help.

How to tell when exterminator is cheating
We have subterranean termites and from what I've read, the most likely treatment will be boring holes through the slab and injecting a non-repellent type termiticide. I will be calling a few places next week and see what they recommend.
A few questions: Can the exterminator dilute the material and use a lower concentration? Can they put less solution into the holes than recommended? How can I tell? What is the best way to tell that I'm getting what I am paying for?

Greetings,
My husband and I are looking to install a stone veneer (Lowes desert quartz ledgestone) wall above our fireplace. The wall above the fireplace is offset approximately 8" from the main living room wall (total size is 6' x 6') and we are unsure as to whether it is capable of holding approximately 500 lbs of stone. We have identified the studs but are unsure if they are structurally secured to the primary wall frame or if this is just an aftermarket facade. We poked a small hole in the drywall next to one of the studs and saw that the studs are only 2x2's and are not connected to the wall behind them. If anyone has any advice, we'd greatly appreciate it. I'm attaching a few photos of the fireplace. We are looking to put stone over the diamond patterned portion.

Leaking Air Valve
Hello all,
Today my water system sprung a leak just inside where it comes into the house from the well.

gas hedge trimmer
I've got a huge job ahead of me to trim hedges and bushes. I was looking at getting just a gas hedge trimmer.
After looking today at local mower shop, I found an extended reach hedge trimmer, or the extension type that I can put different type accessories on.
I just got a nice Kawasaki commercial weed wacker, about 1.5 yrs ago.
I've got a blower, edger, wacker all in separates, but I like the idea of having the one motor and separates.
I'm concerned about the separates because they are ran by a cable, I fear that cable is going to wear out and break.
I want to know what you've got and why you chose that way.
Local mower shop has Echo and STIHL, which one and why? Or what others would you suggest?
Bubbles
1950's house, plaster walls. There were some lumps in it. I don't know what caused them. The owner had some one grind them down & called me to patch the wall. I'm using the light weight joint compound (blue top). The first coat went on nicely but I'm getting bubbles in the second coat. What did I do wrong? Should I have used a different product? What's my next step?

multiple outlets no power
We have recently been installing new cabinets in our kitchen and have found as we are finishing up that 4/10 outlets in our kitchen no longer have power.
I went through the following steps:
Touchless voltage tester shows no power
Multimeter shows 0v n-g/0v n-p/0v p-g on all outlets (tested each individually / Tested actual Wires also)
Attempted to reset all breakers - none of them appear to be the cause of power loss
Took cover panel off of circuit box - tested each individual breaker to the bar all of them showed 120v-124v on single poles - 240's all showed appropriately
While I did install a new GFIC outlet in the bathroom on the ground floor this outlet is on another breaker and it is functioning right now anyway - no further GFIC's in the house.
Standing AC unit works but makes horrendous screeching noise all the while
It's an 8 year old York unit that has worked perfectly for the couple years I've had it. The other day I had it on for about 30 minutes and the entire time it made this deafening screeching noise. It worked fine and pushed cold air. I took off the tube that goes to the window and nothing was clogged. The water receptacle wasn't clogged either. I turned it on a couple more times, same thing. Salvageable or time for a new one?

Home security system recommendation
I want to purchase a DIY wireless home security system. For the moment, I do not want to pay a home monitoring service and prefer to be informed of my alarm status via the Internet (WiFi and cellular) and text messages. I’d like to have the ability to connect to a monitoring service in the future.
The main entrance to the house is a steel gate (http://i.imgur.com/E5g9kjI.jpg). I’m not sure if a sensor exists for this type of entrance. I have 3 solid wood doors, 1 aluminum door with window, many aluminum horizontal louver style windows (http://i.imgur.com/1JQCL9w.jpg) and a couple of glass horizontal louver style windows (http://i.imgur.com/LimU2kf.jpg).
Also, I have an indoor cat.
I wanted some input on what types of alarm systems and sensors you guys recommend for this setup to work and I can install.
So far, I really like the SimpliSafe (http://simplisafe.com/) system, but doesn’t offer ZWave or Camera support, which is something I would like to add in the future.

Question about an underground splice
Folks,
We're replacing a 600 square foot shed/barn. The old one had 220 supplied to it, from the house, via a 150 foot-long three-wire underground 4 gauge cable in a PVC tube. The old feed went into the building in a PVC tube that runs about 5' up the side of the building. The wire is aluminum. The new building will be located about 6' away from the old one. This means I need to do something to "stretch" the wiring. I'd like to (somehow) bury a splice from the old Al wire to a run of new Cu, and run the new Cu in PVC to the new building. We only need 30 amp 220 service so the 4 gauge should be fine. We will have a building permit and inspections.
Questions:
- How can I do the Al to Cu splice in a manner that's code compliant and underground?
- Should the splice be in a box of some sort? What sort?
- The feed to the building will be in a PVC pipe running vertically up the side of the building. My amateur reading of the code seems to suggest this needs to be 8' high before entering the building. That seems odd. How high must it be before the pipe enters the building?
- My on-line reading suggests that we should have a 4-wire run from the house to the barn (hot-hot-neutral-ground). Is this a code requirement? I'd hate to have to re-run the entire cable.

Deck Footing question above ground or no?
About ready to submit my plans for a residential deck in NJ.
Code looks to be 22" footing diameter and 9" of thickness buried to 30". Everything I see recommends having the footings about 4" about grade.
Setting it up with a 22"x9" footing would leave me with 21" of buried post. I don't think this is optimal.
My questions is if I increase the footings to 34" (so that they are buried to 30" and I have 4" above grade) what is the acceptable diameter.. do I still need 22"?
Thanks in advance

Loud bang/boom from compressor, one corner then very hot and leaking.
From inside the kitchen, we heard a bang/boom from the outside like a door slamming shut. Went outside and noticed compressor was leaking from one upper corner (looks like it just started) and that corner was very hot. I burned my hand on it and I think the sheet metal is discolored. A/C and compressor seemed to continue to work, but I turned off the A/C and got my camera to take some pics.
I would appreciate opinions on what may have happened and what I would need to do to repair this.
Thanks.

Hello folks! hope all is well with u guys.
I have a concrete porch in the back of my house. it was poured( i guess it was poured) on top of a cinder block wall which is about three feet high.
In the past 4 years one corner of the concrete porch has started to rise up.
The whole porch is 16 feet by 8 feet with an expansion joint in the center. The right half of the porch is where this problem is occurring. there is no subsidence of concrete on the corner diagonally opposite to this problematic corner. the concrete on the corner diagonally opposite is smooth and flush just with a crack.
I am unable 2 post pics because this website keeps telling me picture loading error.

Wet redwood vs kiln dried
My deck is a "T" shape deck with the top part being exposed to the sun almost all day. I began replacing the old boards on the horizontal section of the T with wet con heart because it was actually better looking than the kiln dried, meaning less knots. Would it be alright to use kiln dried redwood in the I part of the T since it is more shady in the area? I know it will cost a little more for those boards but I thought that after the initial 3 month or so, then all boards would be ready for the preservative.

Fed up with cheap multi-turn angle valves
Hi all,
I have a 20 year old house with copper pipes and the handles on 2 undersink angle valves have broken so far. I googled angle valves and some will say that we ask a lot of angle valves, not turning them for 10, 20 years and then expecting them to turn off with little effort. Probably a lot of truth to this but in any case I'd like to replace some of mine with 1/4 turn units. My understanding is that the 1/4 turn sometimes do not fully turn off due to tiny defects in the metal but they are less likely to get stuck and break.
Problem is, the Brasscraft ones the home improvement center carries don't work with the existing copper ferrule on my pipes (I'd rather not remove the existing ferrule). I'll probably go to a pro plumbing shop. It looks like the Watts 1/4 turn will work with existing ferrules. Is this a good way to go for replacement?
I also need a 1" gate valve that has failed (main house shutoff). Is there any preferred brand?
Also, I read some instructions on replacing angle valves and it suggested 2 turns of Teflon tape on the male threads. Is this a good idea?

Spin cycle ONLY!
I'm *pretty sure* that I have a faulty timer, but I thought I'd post here to see if you guys agree.
When I turn on the washer, it will fill up the tub with water, but then immediately start to spin instead of agitate. It doesn't train the tub, but spins it while it's full and also does the water spritzing thing (which leads to a wet floor...)
What do you guys think? I'm no expert, but from what I read online the timer seems to be most likely culprit. Anything else that it could be?
Thanks in advance!

Aeration for Sulfur reducing Bacteria??????
I've been fighting smelly water and slight staining on both hot and cold for a while now. Water tests very good with iron at 0.24, ph 8.2, hardness 57. I had a sulfur gas test performed by the North Carolina State Lab (which takes about 30 days) and it showed sulfur bacteria negative but sulfur reducing bacteria positive. I have been treating the shared well (shared with one full time resident and three part time which I am one ) with food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide, 16oz about once a month and it seems to help. This is a drilled well about 200' deep.
Now, my personal system comprises a booster pump with pressure tank, a 10" trash filter around 30-40 microns, a 10" five micron filter and a Sterilight ultraviolet filter. The system is usually not used for two to three weeks at a time, then used for about two weeks. When first arriving the water usually smells so I treat both filters with chlorine or peroxide. The filters are brownish in color and the treatment causes the faucet water to turn brown, clear up after a few minutes of running and be odor free for about 8- 10 days then start smelling again. Filter treatment again solves the problem for the same period. I think the residue in the filters builds up and restarts the problem. It seems to be less smelly on faucets with an aerator but never much problem on outside faucets that do not go through the filters. Thinking about trying a venturi in line aerator, mostly because it's the cheapest test. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to treat this problem.

Ingersoll-Rand 231C 1/2-Inch Impact Wrench
I bought a IR 231C pneumatic impact wrench earlier this year and it does the job, but it seems to wobble a lot once the fasteners are loose. This is especially noticeable when removing lug nuts. Once the lug nuts are loose, it isn't a nice and smooth motion the rest of the way off, it's a wobbly motion that doesn't seem right. I'm using a deep impact socket, so perhaps this is the cause? The anvil spins true with no wobbling motion when free spinning without a socket, but when a socket is on there and it's under load, it wobbles a lot. I've even seen tiny metal fragments flying off the lugs when removing lug nuts.

Battery removed and mower set inside storage building for several months before I looked at it.
Battery cables covered with rust, cleaned them, connected battery charger-starter and mower started with little trouble, but blew white smoke from exhaust, and observable evidence of oil leak from around exhaust connection to block.
Ran fine with no load but continued to blow white smoke for several minutes before I shut it off and loaded onto my trailer.
Muffler and exhaust appears to have been replaced or repaired with a rigged replacement, including coat hanger.
I personally used the mower for her, last season and it was running fine with no smoke while I used it then.

Pallet Board Stage Lights
Hey all!
I'm pretty new to the forum, but I have this idea for some mood lighting for our stage and I wanted a little input/help with the project. I have done some single light wiring before, however I know this project will be a little more intensive than that. The idea is to take a Pallet and mount something like 12 soft white (40W equivalent) light's onto it, then to stand them up behind the musicians as a backing light. I'm not super familiar with wiring multiple lights together in this fashion (to one single switch) but I have seen it done before. We would also like to put them on a dimmer switch if that makes a difference.
I can mount the sockets just fine, and understand the differences between hot and neutral wires, I just don't really understand how to wire it all together (to one switch). So, if you think you can help me, it would be greatly appreciated! Even if you just have a few ideas to throw out, I'll try to keep you guys updated on how the project goes!

Ejector Jet stuck in well
Hello all, First time poster. My problem: We have an old farmhouse with a 3 in well, about 70ft. deep Water has been good quality and good supply until recently. The house stood empty for a little over a year and well was un-used during that time. Renovating the house and when we tried to pump water it came extremely slow..... Did pump up to pressure after a long while of running...but as soon as you draw out the supply from the pressure tank it is a slow draw again. It is a jet pump system with a 3/4" and a 1" line going down the well. We put a new pump on and no change. Thinking that either a problem with the foot valve or the screen had gotten plugged over. The lines are the black plastic with hose barb ends and hose clamps. Tried to pull them out and the ejector is stuck... have a come along for a good solid pull, but know that can only pull so hard or will tear the line loose...:( Have lowered 1" shaft on a good rope down alongside the pipes and have banged on the jet??? quite a lot, with absolutely no results... After 4 or 5 days of periodically hammering on this thing' I am certain it will not come out. In my mind I have came up with the idea of welding pieces of sawblade to the bottom of a shaft and lowering it down to just above the ejector and slowly turning it with a drill with the hopes that it will knick/cut the lines enough at that depth that the hoses rip loose at the depth of the jet..... I know....that sound crazy..... but this area is mostly sulphur water and if we drill a knew well, we will likely get that kind of water. :( So my question is: Question#1. does anyone manufacture a 2 line jet for a 3" well anymore??? I have searched the web and made a number of phone calls, and have came up empty handed.. I have located a 1 line system that uses a leather seal on the ejector. Question #2 If by some miracle I get those lines cut off at the old ejector, will I have a water supply that would still be able to work up past the old ejector in the well? With a 2 line system there should be no leather seal to block off the water supply...right? Question #3 Once I get those lines cut off, how could I pump water up out of the well to determine the supply flow before I make the investment in this 1 line jet system. It was quoted to me at $371 not including the piping. I appologize for such a lengthy post, But I am desperate to save this well!!! Thanks for all replies!!! Rick

building a deck floor on top of existing tin sheeting
Hello, I'm new to the board and looking for some guidance.
Im working on a house in uptown New Orleans. second floor balcony has tin sheeting on top of old cypress flooring. i wanted to add a layer of plywood and then salvaged tongue and groove flooring with exterior seal.
my question is , is it kosher to frame/level up the existing balcony with wood, then set plywood on top? on the lowest dipping part of the deck there is maybe two inches of gap where the ply would sit.
can i caulk the hell out of all the seams, maybe add spray foam insulation, etc? and build on top of that?

Choosing a CFL (or LED?) bulb for outdoor light
I just installed a patio light that is rated for max 100W bulb. Do I understand it right that if I put a more powerful incandescent bulb (say 150W) the insides of the lamp may overheat? The 100W is not giving me a bright enough light so I want to have something brighter. So CFL (or maybe LED?) is the way to go, right? With something like 150-200W equivalent lumens. Now, I also would like a CFL light that warms up fast. Can you recommend a specific brand/model of CFL bulbs with a fast warm up? Or is LED better? I don't mind paying more for a bulb as long as it warms up fast and is bright enough. Thanks!

King Truss Beam options for removing load bearing wall?
Hello,
I'm new to the forum but not new to houses. I recently bought my third one (biggest project yet) and I'm working on fixing it up. The house is a single story 24x30 in the main (original) structure with 2x4 trusses (king truss) every fourth one. I am going to remove a load bearing wall which separates the house at the 12' mark. I wanted to ask you guys before I go to the local lumber yard and speak to a project assistant/manager. I checked with the local municipality and no interior building permits are needed, they told me that any interior renovations do not need inspected.
What beam options are available given the trusses that I mentioned? I really like the idea of the hidden beam in the attic with hangers which the ceiling joists strap to because it is hidden away with posts which go down to the foundation. (I've seen them mentioned as "blind beam", "blind header" etc but I don't think that this is a viable option due to the king post and both "webs" which extend from the center of the truss to the peak and the half way points.
Is a blind header a possibility here? Could I run two beams (one on either side of the king post and strap my ceiling joists to them? I would run the straps over top and down the other side of each to prevent the beams from rolling one way or the other and then posts from each beam down to the floor. I cannot think of any way to temporarily cut out the king post and web posts to insert the beam.

Replacing Rotted subfloor and sole plate in bathroom
I am the process of fixing subfloor problems caused by a leaking shower in the second floor bathroom. One section that is rotted extends under the sole plate to the other side of the wall. I need to replace the subfloor from this side to about 2 inches on the other side, and this section of sole plate. To male things fun, that black pipe is a natural gas pipe and the shower water pipes are on the left. Oh Joy. The wall is not load bearing. I have been in the attic several times and visually seen the top plate. In fact I have sat on it and laid across it while installing a bathroom fan.
Not sure how to proceed. to replace this small section of sole plate and the subfloor that extends underneath it. Because of additional rot, and the need to relocate the shower drain, I will be removing a section that extends behind the picture about 4 feet and two the left to the next joist where this sections seam is.
I am just experienced enough to know I should ask for help on this one.

Perpendicular / Sideways Studs, Thin Partition Walls, Math and Soundproofing
This is my first post, please be kind. :)
When you're tight on space and it doesn't take long to consider turning the 2x4's sideways so that the studs are now rotated 90-degrees and perpendicular to the adjacent wall--you gain 2 precious additional inches of room or closet space doing this. So when is this space saving/gaining thin-walled construction a good idea and more importantly when is it bad?
Walls with doors seems to be a no-go, and certainly exterior or any interior load bearing walls are clearly out (against code as well). But I was not finding any rules of thumb that helped to decide when thin-wall construction can work well--the only obvious choice would be for closets, and beyond that I didn't know. if anyone knows of a good source for some rules of thumb then please reply.
The thin wall (sideway studs) will pass more noise through them, not because the sheetrock is closer together, it's because the studs are not as rigid sideways and you have more direct connection of the stud to the sheetrock; if you can add 1/4" of styrofoam or other soundproofing material then it would help. If you really need the thinest wall possible and it must be soundproof, then consider draping plastic inside and then fill it up with DRY play sand; to dry the play sand you have to spread it out on the floor with plastic and indirectly blow the air around with fans, and rack the sand a few times a day for a few days, but you'll have maximum soundproofing with you thin walls! You fill the walls by laying sheetrock sideways, and filling it up 4-feet, then 1 or 2 feet at the top. Filling to the top is not as bad as you think, especially the last foot, and you're already a stubborn determined DIYer who demands those 2 extra inches while refusing to give up an inch (or would that be decibel) on soundproofing! If you want decent soundproofing, don't want to spend big bucks on materials, fear the thought of racking sand on the floor for days, then cut a sheet of firerock almost as big as the inside of your stud, then drill a hole in each corner, about 6" inward left/right and about 24" from the bottom or top; place a rubber grommet inside each hole and run a wire in the bottom holes and feed up to the top hole, loop through that and tie onto a hook at the top of the middle of the stud. This extra mass will help stop sound waves. and will not vibrate with the studs of the wall. If you like you can seal around the edges with caulking and that will also not pass sound waves. The very best soundproofing methods require making walls thicker, so I've limited my focus...

old mortise lock issue
Hi I replaced my mortise lock with a new system. I didn't replace the guts inside the door, since that was another $400 to purchase. I just replaced all the outside fittings. Attic Ventilation Gable Soffit, Ridge, Powered,Solar Oh My!! Need Suggestions
Looking for suggestions on attic ventilation. To help save on energy bills.
I live in northern Alabama.
House is 2350 sq. Standard Ranch style house. (No tall ceilings etc)
Not sure if it matters but I will try to explain the foot print of the house.
The original part of the house was rectangle with gable vents on the 2 sides of the house and soffit vents every 6 feet or so.
Now the house has an add-on to make it an L shape which consists of a 2 1/2 car garage and maybe 10'x20' or 25' family room. There is one more gable vent on the side of the add-on (above the garage) same soffit vents and one whirly vent in the roof.

DC power chord
Hello - I'm new here- so I apologize if this is a repeat question, or a no-brain-er but we'll find out...
I am working on an art project in which I want to run 2 old 16mm projectors from a [one] car battery. Both of the projectors have a dial/switch on them which can be turned from A.C ("60 cycle 115 volt") to (DC -or- AC 25 cycle)...
[The way it is labeled is unclear but I cant imagine the "110 volt" applies to the DC option as well]
Other relevant info listed on the projectors:
First one is listed as "AC 115volt -OR- DC 9amp"
Second one lacks that clarification and states "115volt / 8amp"
I've consulted an "electrical specialist" at Lowes who seemed to think that I could cut off the ends of my power chords ["10A, 250 V - 15A, 125V"] and attach alligator clips to connect to the 12V battery.

Arc Fault Breaker tripping
I have a three year old vacation home near the beach. The home is wired with the mandated arc fault breakers, Eaton type Fireguard AFCI CHAF. In the master bedroom and only the master bedroom when I plug in a hand held (10 amp) vacuum, the breaker trips. If I plug the same vacuum in all the other AFCI breakers - no tripping. Called the builder who called the original installer and he swapped out the breaker in the master bedroom. Test the circuit with the vacuum - same problem. The only load on the circuit is a couple of table lamps and one ceiling fan.
The only difference on the configuration of the master bedroom circuit is a GFI outlet that protects on outdoor patio outlet. I have tested the GFI and it functions properly.
Any ideas?

Mouldy Central AC in Apartment
Hello. I just found this board while researching ways of cleaning my AC unit and was hoping to get some tips or answers to my questions.
Story:
Over a year ago, we noticed that the parquet flooring near our ac unit was becoming discoloured.
Upon further personal inspection, it was obvious that a leak from the AC unit was causing the damage. Management was notified and they sent an employee to inspect and repair the leak, and hired contractors to replace the flooring.
Several months afterwards, the flooring began to deform and discolour again. Upon removal of our furniture from the area, there was black mould growing on the wall baseboard and much more severe discolouration of the flooring. After notifying management again, they sent another employee to 'clean' the area and replace the baseboard and flooring. The repairman removed everything, rubbed off the visible mould with a metal scraper, sprayed what he said was a 'mould cleaner' (when in actuality was just a sealant with no mould fighting properties, as I later confirmed on the internet) and replaced the baseboard and flooring.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener Kaput?
Hi gang. I've been having range issues with my opener (can only seem to open it when in the driveway). Well, last night I decided to pop the circuit board off real quick (without disconnecting any leads to it) just to see that the antenna had a good connection to it. I didn't unplug the unit (I guess a big mistake) but screwed the board back in and now the motor unit won't power up. I swear I was extra careful not to fry anything so it seems really strange that this happened. I made sure the outlet itself has power.
Any ideas on whether I can just get a new logic board or may it not be that at all? The model number of the unit is: 139.53985

Hello everyone,
I'll try not to make this post too long.
I just installed a new entry door and security storm door for the front of my house. I am by no means an expert, just an amateur DIY'er. I did this install this past Sunday. Took me all day (literally, about 12 hours) due to the fact that the rough opening wood frame was completely rotted, then I had a door that was 2 inches too small and had to run back/forth to Home Depot several times.
I was able to fix the rotted wood by framing/installing a 36" RO using 5/4 x 6, then I had to frame out the door further using 1x4" to make the 32" door fit. This is for a house with brick left side and wood right side.
Lot's of questions!

Rubbing alcohol on my black plastic side door panels
I was just prepping the surface of my plastic black side door panels
to clean it but quickly after drying I noticed this whitish stain and in the light
it actually looks like the colors of the rainbow.
Does anyone know what this is? How do I remove it safely? The other side didn't seem to be affected by the alcohol, just one side.
I tried to use soapy water many times and everytime it dries up it would reappear again. I used some windex also and same thing. It may have helped just a bit but still looks whitish where I was rubbing the alcohol.
Not sure if it's just car wax that I already had on there by mistake when waxing a couple months ago and the alcohol is making it turn white or if the alcohol may have actually done some permanent discoloring on the black plastic material?

Fireplace insert install
Hello,
I have an fireplace insert I purchased off of craigslist, and the previous owner included the stainless steel liner, plus a bunch of stove pipe. I am installing into an existing brick chimney. I believe the previous owner also had a brick chimney this was installed in. I don't plan on doing the install myself, so maybe this is the wrong website to be on, but...
I had a contractor over to give me a quote for install, and he said that the stove pipe was unnecessary in a brick chimney - that only the stainless steel liner was necessary.
Who is right? What is the purpose of ever installing the liner inside the stove pipe?
Thanks!

Removing wash basin faucet help!
Everything I am reading online about removing and installing faucets pretty much goes on the lines of - inset faucet from above, tighten cap screw from below, connect lines and done.
But the problem I am facing in removing the existing faucet is that it has a fat t-pipe below, so there is not way it can be pulled out from the top. (Pics below: top, bottom, front. Sorry about the inverted image, somehow the upload manager insists on displaying it as such even though it shows up fine on my PC).
So there has to be some way to remove the top part - but how? I did remove a small piece from the top of the handle and remove a screw from inside, but that did nothing. Then I tried brute force, trying to force the level anti-clockwise. That broke off the left handle. Tried grabbing the left top part with pliers and rotating but the grip is not sufficient.
So what is the trick here? How do I remove this faucet?
Thanks in advance for the help.

AC intermittently stops working
Hi guys,
I recently moved into a small house in Florida. My GC (with the help of an AC tech) had installed an AC about 2-3 months ago. It consists of an outdoor condenser (which was new) and an indoor air handler (which was 2nd hand). Initially the AC worked great, however for the past 2 weeks I have been having problems.
Basically the AC will become less and less effective over time. The vents will have significantly lower air output along with passage of only minimally cool air. I can hear the blower making its normal noises during this, despite minimal air output.
The first time this happened, I turned the machine off, then restarted it several hours later. It then worked fine for a few days. I would have it on for about 14 hrs a day. The problem started again about a week later. At that time I looked at the air handler, which appeared to be slowly dripping liquid. I did some Googling, which made me think the problem could be frozen coils. As far as why the coils could be frozen, possible causes (according to random websites) included:
1. Poor air flow - Could be due to dirty filter, dirty coils on condenser or air handler, problems with tubing, or due to blocking an excessive amount of vents. With regards to the last point, I have 6 vents in the house and I had blocked all but 2-3 a few weeks before the problem started.
2. Low freon/freon leak
At that point I kept the AC off, left the AC's fan on, changed the filter, and let the water drip out overnight. The following morning when I tried the AC, it worked fairly well, though not at 100%.
Partial Outage, Breakers OK, Lights Dimmed, Not quite sure what to do
So, funky problem.
My son goes to turn on the tv downstairs this morning. For 5 years it has been plugged into a surge protector, along with his xbox, a surround sound unit, receiver, dvd player, and a powered subwoof. None of the surround sound components have been turned on in ages, as our upstairs tv has become our main movie center. He occasionally unplugs the xbox to take it to moms, but otherwise nothing has changed.
He said that as soon as he turned the tv on (its an older 32" tube style tv) the lights dimmed slightly, then resumed power, then everything went out. The entire downstairs living room has no power (plugs or light fixtures), the light fixture in an adjacent bedroom doesn't work but the plugs DO, and the lights AND plugs in the other adjacent room work. Also, the bathroom off the living has full power. Everything upstairs is normal.
Naturally I assumed it was a breaker. Not so much. I even reset ALL of them including the master. I tested and reset all the GFI plugs (even though these rooms still had power). I went as far as to turn open up the breaker panel, turn off the main power and all breakers, remove the one suspected bad breaker, pull a matching breaker from the opposite side (my understanding is with 220, 110 is split down each side?) and tested it. No luck. But even if one of the 110 circuits was toast, why would all other breakers on that side work. I subbed in a good breaker of the same amperage from a known working circuit into the couple that I thought it could be (two are labelled "downstairs lites and plugs", which is helpful....) and still had no power on that circuit. Just for kicks, I took the wire from the bad circuit and plugged it into a known good breaker on the other side and flipped the power on - no luck. So I reconnected everything as it was originally and in my head I can rule out bad breakers.
Next I went with a popped off backstabber on one of the switches or light fixtures. I pulled a few random ones in that room (two switches, one plug, one fixture) and they're all screw type - not spring type backstabbers. All the wires appeared secure, intact, unburned, and the grounds were all secure. For kicks I gave each one a little wiggle and made sure they were tight with the screwdriver. I did NOT do this with all of the plugs/switches/wires. My assumption is that if SOME are screw style and not backstabber style, I probably don't have a popped off backstabber.

Can't install threshold moulding
The old threshold molding on an exterior door wore out so I bought a new one. I got the aluminum plate fitted and installed, but I can't figure out how to put in the rubber seal.
Here's a pic of the destructions, including an image of what the profile of the rubber molding looks like:
Image: http://s1.bild.me/bilder/260513/9992956door_seal.jpg (http://www.bild.me)
It goes on real easy, provided it isn't already screwed to the floor. But if the molding is installed, you can't put in the screws.
I tried warming it in hot water to make it more pliable, but still couldn't get it to start. I thought about using aerosol hair spray as a lube, but don't have any on hand.

The frosting area is very cold but as far as I can tell, the rest of the finned tubing is not getting cold. I believe this means that the refrigerant gas is low as in a leak somewhere. Insulating basement question
I'm in the process of fixing a previous remodel/addition that was put on my house, and have am curious how to go about insulating the basement ceiling/floor of the new addition.
A sunroom was placed on my deck, with the floor joists for it extending into my basement. The floor of the sunroom is insulated only with fiberglass batts fit between the studs, with plywood sheathing underneath to hold them up. There does not appear to be any air/water barrier in place. The floor joists extend into my basement, so the insulation from the addition extends into the space of the rim joist cavity in my basement.
Do I need to keep the floor of the addition open to rim joist cavity in my basement or can I seal the two rooms off and completely isolate the sunroom? I'd like to install XPS foam board into the rim joist space in my basement, but will providing an air/moisture barrier between these two spaces cause condensation problems?
Thanks for the help,
Adam

Vista 20P Configuration Dump?
I have an older Vista 20P, and I'm upgrading (swapping out) the guts for the latest revision of the firmware. The BIOS chip cost as much to just replace the whole panel, so I did.
I have reset the Installer, Master and User 03 codes to something I know (on the old alarm panel) and would like to find a way to "dump" the configuration data to somewhere, whether that's to one of my two-line displays, or maybe to a computer somewhere (although I'm not sure the Vista 20P is serial port/USB friendly?) so I can merge most of that configuration data (manually or automatically) over to the new panel, saving me work. I don't think much is going to change between the panels, as the zone configuration is relatively well thought-out, and I'm just moving all the wires over.
Oh, and I do not want to simply pop the chip and swap it between panels (is the main PROM ASIC where the NVRAM data is stored?) as I do like the idea of having the new board and components, especially given the age of the original 20P.
Any ideas? Am I missing something really silly?
Thanks!

Your CO alarm is beeping. Now what?
Today, most people know about the dangers of carbon monoxide, and why it’s so important to have a CO alarm in your house. But many of us aren’t clear on what to do if that alarm does go off. Continue reading →
Trend Spotting: Make Your Own Embellished Faux Antlers
Protect Yourself with a CO Detector
Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because you can’t see, smell or taste it. And it is deadly! Carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America. Each year it proves fatal for hundreds of Canadians, and, makes more than one thousand Canadians sick with varying flu-like symptoms. According to a recent national Home Safety Poll: 60% of Canadians DO NOT have a CO alarm 15% believe CO alarms LAST FOREVER 18% believe CO alarms are only needed if you have a GAS FURNACE 44% DO NOT have their heating or other combustion systems checked annually 26% DO NOT think they have to replace CO alarms every 5-10 years We need to change these statistics! Education is the key. Appliances that use gas, oil, wood, coal or any other kind of fossil fuel produce carbon monoxide during combustion. Sources in your home can include your furnace, water heater, wood stove, fireplace, oven and of course automotive exhaust. Normally these appliances are vented outside, but if there is a leak or poor installation, tragedy looms. Your ONLY protection is a CSA-approved carbon monoxide alarm. And remember… exposure to carbon monoxide reduces your ability to think clearly, so never delay if your CO alarm goes off or you sense there’s a problem. Get everyone out of the house and stay out, then call the fire department or 911. Find out how you can get a FREE Carbon Monoxide Detector, Click Here!
