Older Westinghouse HVAC package, blower won't come on (low speed not working)
Hi everybody, searched but couldn't find this problem on equipment this old. house built in 1976, I think this is original equipment. Westinghouse model 1D036**AAON rooftop mounted HVAC package unit. Natural gas heat, electric A/C. On the model # , not sure if those are zeroes or ohs. The asterisks are extremely hard to make out, maybe AT, maybe A1, might be only one character.
So I call for heat, it fires and burns for a few minutes, then a slight hum for about half second, and it all shuts down. Blower works fine for A/C and manual.
I thought it might be the relay, 84-10103-301E, so I replaced it with Supco 90293. Purchased from ebay seller, New Supco 90293 Relay 8400 Series SPDT 16A 24V 90293 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/121259289804). Still no low speed blower.
I've tested Cam-stat FALTS37C-13T-120-170 and it seems to be functioning properly. I pulled the two leads that go to the blower/fan relay. then powered the unit up, called for heat, and after a bit, got continuity at those two terminals.
Tested the capacitor on the blower housing, rated at 5uf, tested between 5 and 6 (don't remember exactly).

Electric or heat pump?
Framing a 16x34 2 story attached garage with 2 bedrooms over top in New York State. Currently 25 cold degrees outside.
I'm looking at heating/cooling options.
My current HVAC forced hot air propane powered system won't reach to the new addition.
This seems to be the cheapest...I can install electric baseboard heat to both bedrooms and put a small electric heater in the garage to use when needed with a/c window units in the bedrooms for summer.
I've seen radiators that install on the wall.
If there was a small enough boiler that is the sizeof an on demand hotwater tank
I could install that in the garage and run a propane line to it.
I'm looking for recommendations. Any help would be much appreciated.

Trying To Re-Caulk Bathtub
OK, trying to recaulk bathtub. Having trouble getting old caulk out.
Old caulk does not appear to be silicone. It is extremely hard, and cracked. Sections of it are completely gone. It's the same color and consistency as the grout in the tile.
Bought a Homax Caulking kit. It ate the plastic blade before I was 1/4 of the way done.
Bought another caulk removal tool with a design similar to the Homax, except it's metal. Scratches the hell out of the tub.
Bought some Motsenbockers Caulk Remover. Instructions said let sit for 3-4 minutes. I gave it two hours. No good,

Replacing shower valve assembly
Have older home (1940's) with 2 handle shower faucets. Both valves have been leaking for sometime. I have been unable to find the correct replacements so I have been repairing them but they eventually leak again.
I bought a replacement valve kit which includes everything I would need to completely retrofit the existing setup, but looking at the setup from the closet side inside the wall their is no valve, only 3 lines that lead to each of the shower valves and the shower head.
My question is can buy a kit to replace the entire setup from the front side, inside the shower?
I think I need to replace the entire valve assembly including the seat but not sure if this is possible.

Rheem element change
My daughter is complaining about a lack of hot water recently, so i thought I would start with a flush of the tank.
The water was cold.
No rust or debris came out, the water was clean from the start.
Can I assume that if the water drained out cold that the lower element is blown?
The tank is about 10 years old, is it worth changing an element or should I just change the tank completely?
I have done a lot of work here and have a fair amount still to do, if I can delay the tank a year or so, it would be nice, but if it is better to change it at 10 years of age I will. The other Rheem for the upstairs bathroom, of the same vintage, went 17 years and still work but the insurance company insisted it be replaced.

Optimizing ODR Settings
Running a Viessmann boiler with indirect DHW and a TACO ODR (will get model tonight). The house is a 2 story Cape with cathedral ceiling/loft style living room. 2nd floor is shut down, only heating 2 zones on the first floor (master bed and kitching/dining/living area). Any tips for optimizing the settings. We just bought the house this fall, and I have a feeling the settings are probably out of whack. When I get home from work tonight, I will post what they are currently set at.
Just looking for some help on making everything more efficient.

metal roof leak, plastic issue(?), and mold
Cabin roof (recreational property) was installed last July, not sure when it started leaking. May have found my leak, how should I repair? Soon as I pull the screw out, water pours in instead of dripping in.
Second issue, I discovered the installers didn't remove the plastic off any of the metal. Is that going to cause me a problem?
Last, and maybe for another section, I have mold starting to appear on interior wood where the water leaked in, should I spray it with water & bleach or water & vinegar?

New Heat pump, heat strips not working.
Just built a new house, installed a Rheem Heat pump, now that its in the 30's, it was not warming enough, installer came back and installed 5 KW heat strip. Problem is, the Honeywell visionpro TH8000 does not kick the heat strip on, it cant get over 72 in the house, so it turns off, and in 5 minutes tries again, over and over.. If I raise the heat to 76, "Aux Heat" text comes on, BUT, turns off in about 2 minutes and never gets warm. If I switch to Emergency Heat, everything turns off. My installer seems lost, I told him about installer setup codes, even more lost.
Any advice I can give him?
How to remove a drop-in porcelain sink under a countertop?
My porcelain sink has a few chips and my wife wants it replaced.
It looks like an under-mount but when I look from under, it sits on top of the plywood. So, it is a drop-in (on the plywood) before they put the countertop on.
I don't want to remove the countertop as it is a BIG piece. Maybe I can use a router or some sort of cutter to cut around (see the red line in the last picture) and drop it down to the bottom to remove it, then install a drop-in?
How do you cut a porcelain sink? Router with a special bit? Angled cutter or some sort? Or hammer?

Has Anybody Done an Under Lit Counter Top?
I have a thread out there titled "Are There Any Transparent/Translucent Glues For Setting Tiles?
I was searching when I started it and still considering diffusion so it is getting dated but people have replied to it so I'll leave it alone.
I'd love to hear from people who have done this and learn about problems and solutions and if anybody feels like PM'ing me go ahead. I'm cautiously trying out small pieces and can see some problems. The first is a possibility of ruining the properties of the edge lit plastic with glues. Another is the glues themselves. I can't use anything with common cements in it since it has to let light through and its pushing me towards epoxy, lots and lots of expensive epoxy. I've only used small amounts and wonder about problems here.
I'm planning to make a kitchen counter top of Honeycomb Calcite, a deeply translucent stone. The main type I'm using is called Honey Onyx. I'll also be using some light green and white pieces for accent. If I have any hot spot issues I'll use a narrow band of opaque stone along the edge LED's' It's called Onyx but it ain't. Onyx is a quartz with a hardness of 7 and not very reactive. Honeycomb Calcite is reactive, stains and has a hardness of 3. Therefore its going to be topped with 1/4" of tempered plate glass. This stone would probably work in a bathroom or on walls but not on a surface exposed to knives, pots, ceramics and stains. This is very heavy so I'm going to be bracing the cabinets.
The lights will be on a dimmer so I can change the light intensity. Here's an example of laying out some pieces on a work table. The LED strips are wrong and not on well but it still shows possibility:

subcooling, pressures, and ambient temperature
I am looking at a Trane XB13, with TXV, 410a, that calls for 11*F subcooling. What would you expect the liquid line temp to be with an outside air temp about 75*F, inside 74*. Does this varies with different units?
My liquid line is showing 72 -73*, following Trane method, I would need to bring my liquid line pressure to about 255psi to achieve 11* subcool, and doing so yields about 107psi on the suction line pressure - is that a little low although the unit seems to be cooling with about 20* across the coil? from a 10* it yielded before.
With all things been equal, would these pressures change in summer weather - 90*F+.

Chimney Liner question
Hi everyone,
Second question of the day......
The new home that my wife and I purchased needs a chimney liner. In the home inspection report, the inspector noted that the clay lining has almost totally failed and needs to be addressed ASAP.
I had a reputable chimney come out to give me an estimate for a stainless steel liner. The owner of the business came out and he looked in the chimney from the basement. He confirmed what the home inspector said, and then spoke about the difference in labor depending on the liner diameter size used. Currently the boiler utilizes a 7 inch exhaust pipe.
He can do the job for $300 less if he uses a 6 inch liner as opposed to a 7 inch liner. Evidently if he goes with the 7, he would need to break up the clay liner and remove it from the basement access hole, a tedious job at best. If he went with the 6 inch, the job would be a very simple process and a huge labor saver.
Would my series 68 Weil McLain (picture included) operate perfectly fine with the 6 inch liner? The chimney guy said it would be fine, BUT he went on to say, check with an "oil guy". I asked one oil tech ( I am not even sure if he was listing to me), and be bristled with a "yeah that's ok). Well is it really ok?
Thanks,
Zack
Washing machine in the bathroom
Merry Christmas!
I am in the process of buying a portable washer (or a top loader) for the bathroom since there is not much room. But the only water supply available seems to be the single handle faucet (Photo attached). Now I was told the washer could actually damage the facet and I would need to find a special washer with some sort of "slow" valve.
I am here and would like your opinion on this. Is that true that the washing mating could damage the faucet and if yes is there anything I could do or do? Thanks!

The welder can use .030 and .035 wire. Would it be a worthwhile to have both on hand or would one do a lot of what the other can do?

Whirlpool Stacked "Thin Twin" Washer/Dryer - Model # LTE5243DQ6 - 24 inch - Electric - 6 years old - no problems or issues with anything until now
About a week ago the washer was not advancing cycles so I figured it was the Washer Timer and ordered the replacement part.
Installed the new Timer this morning and filled washer. Washer agitator started on "fast" agitation, and then after a few minutes, the agitator slowed to the usual "regular" speed. So far, so good...
After 2-3 seconds, the usual "regular" agitation stopped, and a "hum" was heard. I shut off the machine, it sounded like the machine locked up and there was this burnt smell, like melting rubber or plastic???
Tried to use the control knob to put it at a drain cycle - it started to drain but after 2-3 seconds, it all locked up again and I heard that "hum" again and that burnt smell came back - a bit stronger than before.

Beckett AFG w/ R4184D 1027 and Side Shot SS1 Power vent not firing up
Good evening, and Merry Christmas!
Santa must be mad, because I awoke to a lifeless heating system this morning. I have a Beckett AFG burner with a Honeywell R4184D 1027 controller firing a New Yorker boiler. The system is power vented (SideShot SS1). When I looked at it this morning, the reset button on the controller had popped, so I pushed it, but nothing happened. Neither the power vent, nor the burner, came back on. I switched everything off with the emergency shutoff switch on the basement stairs, waited a while, then tried again. Again, neither the power vent nor the burner made a sound.
In the past, I have had issues with filters clogging, and have had to blow out the line to the tank, replace filters, bleed, etc. In those instances, the burner always *tried* to fire up but couldn't due to lack of fuel. The power vent also always turned on whenever I reset the controller under those conditions. The difference now is that neither the power vent fan, nor the burner, appear to be doing anything.
According to the documentation on the SS1, it appears that the burner shouldn't get any power until the power vent is on, and the fan proofing switch has closed, so I'm confused about why the burner gets enough juice to pop the reset button. The SS1 has power on L1 and L2 but not on the orange and red terminals of the terminal strip, which according to the documentation indicates that "sideshot and the appliance are not interlocked correctly, or malfunction of appliance controls".
I lifted the transformer on the burner and was able to turn the squirrel cage on the blower with no problem, and after a reset, the transformer appeared to be getting 115V (as tested with leads on the solder on the board).
Commercial 3 Phase Question
I don't even know enough to be dangerous, so forgive the rather vague question.....
We have leased a commercial space and we are planning the build out that needs to occur prior to getting the sub contractor quotes. We want to have a rough idea of what is practical before the quote stage. We are creating an area within the space that is going to be a kitchen area and will need all new circuits run for it. The main 600 AMP panel is quite a distance from where this needs to occur. Across the roof is (what was referred to by the owner as a 'bus'). It appears to have been a three phase supply with a series of boxes that machines were individually attached too with power drops. Is it possible to tap into this supply, convert it to single phase and power a sub panel from it? This would mean we wouldn't have to run significant amounts of wire to get power where we need it. I am assuming that IF it is possible, this would be a cheaper solution that wirig a supply line all the way to the sub panel location?
I know this is vague, but generally speaking does it make sense?
Thanks for humoring me!

Questions About Installing A Replacement Gas Hot Water Heater Myself
My daughter and her husband are buying their first house and it has a 19 year old natural gas hot water heater that I think should be replaced as soon as they move in. It looks new but really is 19 years old which I believe is about twice its normal life expectancy.
I'm retired and pretty handy so I'm thinking about replacing the tank myself to save them some money since they are shelling out a lot of cash to purchase the house.
Since replacing a gas hot water heater is something I've never done I have several questions for the members of this forum.

Tapping off of service entrance (load side)
Hello. My existing service entrance comes into my attached garage to a panel that contains only an OCPD/"master switch" (please excuse my terminology - I'm not an electrician but I think I have the right terms here). From there, service goes into the basement to what is the main panel.
I'm interested in putting a panel in the garage essentially right next to this service entrance panel/master switch. I am putting in a 240v heater and a table saw and will be running a small workshop from time to time in the garage. I want to run 100 amp service to a panel there in the garage and then provide a dedicated circuit for the heater (a King Electric unit) and then probably two outlet circuits (120v, 20 amp) for machines like the table saw.
My question is how do I go about tapping off of the panel that's in the garage rather then running all the way back to the garage from the current main panel. And, related, can I just tap off the existing garage panel (and leave the current wiring completely alone), or do I have to put this new panel "inline"?
I'm attaching a photo of the service disconnect panel that is in the garage. Any advice on how best to get a run off of what's here to a new panel I'll install like 2 feet away (say on the side of the same stud) would be most appreciated.
NOTE: there is definitely not any cable slack with what's already there, so if there is going to be any splicing required, please provide details on how I do that and with what devices.

1922 Home bathroom remodel
I have a brick wall (uninsulated) exposed in the bathroom. I am replacing the tub and installing a wall surround. My plan is to paint the brick 2-3 layers for sealing, then put up plastic sheeting and furring strips. Next plan to put up blue board insulation boards, but unsure what to put up as the "innermost" wallboard. The tub surround will cover all down at level, but will probably just be painting above for now.
Any ideas on the best type of board to use. Also concerned about the weight of the installation board but will work with what I have to.
Thanks for any feedback,

How to Turn Off Telephone Line Monitoring, DSC Power 632
how can I turn off the beeping notice that my phone line has been disconnected, on a "DSC Power 632" ?
The alarm system is working fine except that when i turn it on, it eventually starts to beep at regular intervals to let me know that the telephone line has been disconnected. I do not have the option to reconnect the telephone line so I am very hopeful that you can find a way to program it such that there is no telephone monitoring service.
Thank you

help selecting a security system
A couple times, I've come home and noticed that my door is unlocked when I always make it a point to lock the door. I've also noticed that the garage door keypad was flipped up a time or two and I never leave it up on the very rare occasion that I use it. Nothing that I know of is out of place inside though, which is nice, but it's still a bit unnerving coming home to find evidence that someone has been trying to get in, or has gotten into my house, so I'm looking for a solid DIY system with a couple requirements. The house already had an ADT system installed when I moved in, but that's just stupid expensive with their monthly fees.
Here's what I'm shooting for with budget of preferably under $300 and certainly under $500:
- 4+ door sensors
- 3+ motion detectors
- 1+ camera that doesn't have to trigger the alarm. Just record 5 minutes prior to the alarm and 10 minutes after the alarm has been tripped
- audible siren
- some sort of notification system or even real-time camera streaming via the internet
I've looked at AAS Alarm systems (specifically the S400, which has everything except the camera), but reviews and credibility for AAS Alarm seem a bit sketchy, so I might pass on them.

Garbage disposal gurgles once after draining + one other sink in house as well
Hey guys, question here.
I have a double sink in my kitchen. The side with the garbage disposal will gurgle when it is done draining, once. The other side, which has a straight shot to the p-trap, also gurgles once, but usually not as loudly. The dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal side, so that does the same thing.
Just after the P-Trap under the sink there is a Studor Vent. I had one of those cheap black vent caps on it, but that actually made the water drain slower in addition to the gurgling.
I also have one other sink in the house that does the once-drained gurgle. But it is on the second floor, attached to another piece of pipe under the house that hits long before the sink split. And get this: the other sink in that bathroom never gurgles. Neither have Vent.
There is a Y connector where two large pipes meet under the house. Straight back is that bathroom pipe, to the right is the kitchen sink pipe. That connector has clogged twice in the past 2 year and I can easily clear it with an auger, but I am wondering if an airflow issue is making solids sit there or something.
Key to shut off main
Does anyone know where to buy a key to shut off my main water. I bought one on amazon , but it was to big. The one I need must fit inside a 3/4 pipe, when I remove the cap you can look down about 24 inches to ****. I can get the town to shut it off, But I would like to have my own for emergencies.
Thanks

Oil furnace reset button tripped occasionally for the past 10 days
I have a 1986 ultra 80 furnace with a Beckett model burner.
Since 12/10, we started to notice that sometimes when the "system on" indicator on our thermostat was on, the furnace didn't start. When we checked the furnace, the red safety light was lit. When we hit the reset button, the furnace always started immediately as long as the temperature set on the thermostat was higher than the room temperature it read. Then the furnace stopped on its own when the room temperature reached the set temperature, and could start on its own when the room temperature dropped below the set temperature.
This problem doesn't occur everyday, and cannot be reproduced by ourselves. Accordingly to my notes, we experienced the problem on 12/19 (twice), 12/16, 12/15, 12/13, 12/12, 12/11 (twice), 12/10 (twice).
The furnace was tuned up and vacuumed by professionals last winter. We also had the transformer replaced last winter to fix the delayed ignition problem that tripped the reset button a few times. We don't think there is delayed ignition problem this time since the furnace can start immediately after we reset it.
Initially we suspected the problem might be due to failure to sense flame. On 12/16 we saw the reset button tripped about 45 seconds after the furnace started when we happened to be near the furnace. However, for all the other times, we didn't know when the reset button tripped, and the furnace could keep running after we hit the reset button, not keep tripping within a short period of time. Anyway, we cleaned the cad cell on 12/17 (although it didn't look dirty at all when we removed it from the furnace) and tightened the wiring connections. It didn't have problem yesterday but today I had to reset it twice, first time at 5:15 pm when I tried to increase the set temperature on the thermostat, and second time at 8:50 pm when the thermostat tried to start the furnace to maintain the set temperature. The furnace stopped normally and is not having problem at this moment.

fluorescent light wiring question
Based on the bulbs (T12), I believe I have a dead ballast in a laundry room fluorescent fixture. I purchased LED replacements and need to rewire the fixture to bypass the ballast and starter and install non-shunted tombstones. It seemed fairly straightforward until I took down the fixture, I spotted a very strange wiring arrangement. There is a metal box of unknown purpose with some rather narrow gauge wires connected to it. The Romex coming from the switch for the fixture has it's hot wire (black) routed to it as well and a black wire comes back out which was twisted with the white neutral wire from the Romex. There is also a red wire with the Romex. When the switch is off, I used a current tester and the black wire coming from the mystery box is live. I cannot figure out where the mystery box's narrow gauge brown wires go to / come from. Even with the switch off, I believe the Romex black wire is live due to this wiring arrangement.
Please help! I can try taking better pictures if it helps.

Water Softener / RO Drainage Options
Howdy folks!
So, about a month ago, we had a Kinetico Twin-tank water softener installed, as well as a K5 RO system. We're happy with the results so far... But, there's at least one regeneration a day, and the RO system yields a pretty consistent amount of waste water. Right now, all of this waste water goes into my sump, and I've got an electric sump pump which handles it. However, the sump does need to drain probably 4 times during a regeneration cycle, and then intermittently with the RO drain. I don't really like that it has to drain so much, and have been looking at battery backups for my sump.
For a good system (Basement Watchdog Special +) with the battery and all that, I estimate around $500 to get that done, and a lot of effort, and a lot of parts in a relatively small sump.
My question is, does anyone here have experience with draining softener/RO hoses right to the septic waste line (not sewer, septic)? It would be easy to access, and if I get hooked up with the air-gap and check valves, I feel like it would be a great solution for hopefully less than the $500 I'd spend on the backup sump pump.
Thoughts?

Low voltage switch to power a 110V pump, with a timer countdown (I think)
The previous owner of our house faked his way through improper hot water plumbing by running a recirculating pump 24/7 so hot water was always at hand. Wasteful of propane.
I bought a smart product that keeps the pump off until it detects the movement of hot water out the water heater (e.g., when you turn on hot water). Then it lets the pump run for a couple minutes before shutting it off.
Well, the electronic part of it failed. And the guy who runs the one-man company is a nightmare to deal with. So what can I do myself here? There's a valve that plumbs into the hot water line that completes the power circuit when water moves. That is mechanical and still working fine. How can I connect the two low voltage wires from it to....something.... that can connect up the power to the pump, and start a countdown of say 2 minutes until it disconnects the power again?
Just typing this makes my head hurt.

Goodman GCH95 furnace condensation and or drainage issue
Hi DIY'ers,
I've been trying to solve a problem with a Goodman furnace model gch950453bxac. I just bought the house and the furnace appears to be brand new or less than a year or two old. I don't have any info on who installed it otherwise I'd call them to come recheck their installation. The furnace would run for 10 to 15 minutes and shut off. By searching this forum I discovered that sometimes there is water buildup in the hose running to the pressure switches. Sure enough I found water in the hose. I spent quite a bit of time draining water from the right side pressure switch hose. The one on the left had only a drop or two. Well, I thought that would solve my problem but now I've got most of the water drained but the furnace now will only run for a few minutes then shutoff and water is no longer, or not nearly as much, in the hose. I do now hear water in the fan for the inducer motor and figure that can't be good. There is obviously water still inside the unit but can't figure out how to get the rest of it out. At this point I'm trying to figure out how the condensation pump and drain system within the furnace works because it does not seem to be doing it's job well, at all. The condensation pump itself seems to be fine because I have activated it a couple of times by pouring some of the drainoff into it.
Can anyone point me to a manual that shows how drainage is supposed to work on this furnace? The manual I found with the furnace and what I have so far found online don't have any info on the drainage configuration. Any other suggestions? I will try and take some pictures to post if that will help.

Wattage Capacity of Socket Outlet
I'd like to hook up my Christmas Tree lights to be controlled by a wall switch unfortunately the wall switch does not control any outlets. If I were to use a wall lamp and screw a socket outlet into the lamp socket it would allow me to control the tree plugged into this lamp socket outlet. My concern is that if I would be overloading the lamp. Even if the socket outlet is rated for 600 Watts the lamp socket it is screwed into may only be rated for 60 watts if I was using a conventional bulb in the lamp. Which is my rate limiting step? The capacity of the lamp socket itself or the socket outlet?

What is this green stuff dripping from 05 Impala?
This has got me stumped. A few days ago I noticed a spot of green on the driveway under the front of my wife's Impala. Seems a little TOO bright and green to be antifreeze--but I verified the car has red Dexcool in the radiator and overflow bottle. Fluid has no odor or taste, isn't sticky, feels a little oily like antifreeze--but again it doesn't belong. This drip has persisted for several days even though the car has been driven in the rain. I've looked under the hood and can't see any sign of it except for a barely-visible amount in the cross-member the radiator sits in.
She swears she didn't hit a can of paint, a martian, a zombie, a vulcan, etc.
She & I are both MSU Spartans and bleed green--but our vehicles haven't expressed a school preference. Any other logical explanation for it?

Dryer Causing Oven to Lose Power?
Hi Everyone.
I'm at my wits end and decided to reach out to see if anyone else has had this problem.
*Here's my problem at the highest level:* Pressing the "Start" button on my dryer is no longer causing it to start. Instead, all I hear is a low hum from the dryer. Simultaneously, the power to my oven is also being cut for as long as the dryer start button is held down, and I also see a brief power interruption occur to an outlet in our living room.
These dryer and the oven are each 220V, and each have their own 220V breakers located side by side in my breaker box. The outlet in the living room is part of one of the regular 110V breakers.
I've tested the power outlet that the dryer is plugged into, and it indeed appears to be supplying 220V. I've also tested a different dryer on the same outlet and have seen the same results.

Is this something that needs fixing?
I am in the process of replacing my flat roof.
But on the roof is where the electrical service come in. Here is a picture.
Image: http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w67/143house/Coontie3/IMAG1801_zps50b7da92.jpg
Since it's a flat roof I don't have an attic, but the panels are on the other side of the building, so this conduit enters the narrow space between the ceiling and roof deck and goes to the other end.
Upon looking closer, this metal conduit has a hole and I can see the thick conductors inside of it.
What is the ideal order for finishing multiple rooms?
I recently finished installing and taping drywall in my attic bedroom and bathroom and hallway (boy did that take forever!) With the drywall done I'm not sure what the ideal order for the next steps are to prevent unnecessary re-work, mess cleanup, etc. I realize for some the order doesn't matter, but are there any in my list below that are unideal order? Am I missing any obvious steps?
1. Install concrete board in bathroom walls and floor.
2. Install Bathroom Tile
3. Electrical : Install remaining outlets and switches
4. Install window seats. (I have framing already done)
5. Install interior doors and closet doors.
6. Install baseboard trim and door molding.
7. Paint Primer on drywall and trim

I am new to the site and hope you can help. I wanted to paint my brass bathroom fixtures to satin nickel. I started with the bath tub. I sanded the spout and handles very well with 220 grit sand paper. I then taped very well and applied a metal primer. I applied several coats of the primer and waited 24 hours. This morning, I sprayed with satin nickel. Waited several hours only to find that I can rub everything off with my fingernail. I used Rustoleum products. What did I do wrong? It looks great until, but clearly is not functional.

Where are those generic meds made?
We are transitioning from my wife's company health insurance to both of us being under medicare. We just had a sit down with a company rep that is one of several that takes over the management of medicare and adds their own options for secondary and prescription coverage. When he got very specific about all meds must start out as generic, no previous medical decisions would be accepted, and then THEY would make the determination IF a name brand was necessary I became a bit suspicious. This company also owns their own pharmacy operation.
So where are those generic products being made? I looked at a couple of over the counter pills I have and saw no "Made in America" symbols. Is it a case that they do not have to disclose where theer products come from like some other products?
I could do some searching, but I thought a discussion here might have side benefits beyond my initial curiosity. Somehow it just bothers me to think that we might be pouring a ton of money into foreign pockets from these health insurance programs where the bottom dollar is their primary concern.

I've lost my local wireless connection
I have had a DSL Comtrend Router AR05381U (provided through FairPoint) for over a year. It has provided good service to a Desk Top Computer via the ethernet cable, and for a Dell Laptop via a local wireless connection.
About a week ago, the Laptop lost its wireless connection, and Fairpoint suggested that it was probably the Laptop's PCI Card. I just replaced the PCI Card with a new one, and get the same condition.
I'm writing this on the Laptop, with it hard wired via the ethernet cable, so that supposedly demonstrates that there's nothing wrong with the DSL; but I am intending to take the Laptop out on a road trip today to visit a few other known WiFi areas (McDonalds and a few Public Libraries to see if the Laptop is receptive to those signals.
If that process results in a signal being received, then I have to conclude that the Comtrend Router has ceased producing a viable WiFi signal . . . . and I'll have to take it up with FairPoint. If I don't sense, or get access to a known wireless signal (free or otherwise) I'll have to conclude that my problem is with the Laptop and something beyond the PCI Card.
Can anyone suggest an improvement in my plan of action? I've tried using the repair function, and it just says it cannot proceed because no wireless networks were found in range.

Closet door ball latch broken
The ball latch on one of my interior closet doors is broken. I had tried to adjust it and the piston came out and the screw that holds it in place seems to have dropped down so far I can't use it.
Can this be repaired? I'm willing to replace it but I can't figure out a good way to remove it. There's no obvious way to get the cylinder out of the top of the door.
The first three pictures show the ball latch piston and spring, the fourth the cylinder it fits into on the top of the closet door, and you can even see the screw that has dropped into the bottom of it. I can fish the screw up with a magnet but there's not enough protruding that I can hold it and screw the ball back into it.
Any thoughts?

Nail Pops Galore
I've lived in my '57 ranch for about 4 months and, within the last few weeks, started noticing SEVERAL nail pops in the sheet rock. The nail pops are located on almost every wall and ceiling in the house - mostly up high but not exclusively. In total there are probably 75-100.
I noticed a few here and there when I bought the house but since the weather changed I have noticed them appearing everywhere and have become very concerned.
There are two possible causes I can think of:
- A few months ago I knocked out a wall and put up a header (12' span) on an a former exterior wall to open up the kitchen to the room addition.
- I also had the gutters off for a couple months when replacing the siding.
Any ideas on the cause(s) and/or ideas about how to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Convolutions with Honeywell
In June I put a programmable Honeywell thermostat RTH2300 in our 1956 home. Sometime in the 90's a heat pump had been installed. The directions for the H'well stated how to wire for heat pumps (p21). The directions also stated it wouldn't work for heat pumps(p.ii). I found the latter true now in December, when I switched to heat, and burned up the transformer but got no heat for the house.
So I bought today and installed RTH3100C. The wiring setup from June was long lost. The replacement transformer started getting too hot. I think my meter measured 37 amps on the secondary side. Really irrelevant. What was relevant was some wire to the thermostat was wrong, and was shorting things out.
I went to the air handler, and started taking off wire by wire the loads on each color thermostat wire. Each time I did this, I made the secondary (24v) connection to the transformer. Each time there was a hefty spark, indicating I'd yet to pull the offending wire. The B wire was the culprit: I pulled its load off and no spark, and some clicks occurred while the aux heater kicked in. P.12 of the manual clued me in: an optional slot for the B wire is the C terminal. The house is warm now, and the transformer stays cool.
Thanks to another post that alerted me to forget about the T wire.

Door lock latch wouldn't retract fully due to a broken spring
I have what I believe it's called an "atrium" door and the lockset that goes with it has a very small backset.
As I turn the key or the knob on the inside, the latch would not retract fully half the time. So I removed the lock and opened it up. Inside I saw a spring broken into pieces.
I have a matching backdoor with the same lock, so I removed that and looked, and I can see what that spring is supposed to do.
I don't see any brand, model marking on the locks. I believe the locks must have come with the doors that way as the holes seem to indicate it was a package.

Removing Old Teflon Tape
I moved into a new home (actually about 14 years old) and my wife wanted a new shower head. The instructions for the new device specify that it is attached without teflon tape, and it specifically instructs that any existing teflon tape must be removed before installing the new replacement shower head.
I peeled off as much of the old teflon as possible, but there is still some of it down there in the pipe threads. I don't want to use anything metal to try to dig it out because I am afraid of cross-threading the existing pipe.
Can anyone tell me if there is an approved way for a total amateur to get rid of old teflon tape?

What to do with this zone?
We have a smaller house ~1200 sq. ft. Single story ranch with a boiler and baseboard HW heat. Zone 1 is all of the house except for the bathroom which is located in the middle of the house between the kitchen and master bedroom. There are two baseboard radiators in the bathroom. One is underneath the bathtub  (~3' and I have no idea why it was placed there) and then goes back into the basement and up to the other that runs along side of the wall for another 8 ft.
I don't know why the the bathroom was split off to its own zone and by looking at the piping in the basement it looks like the house was originally all on a single zone. We just purchased the house last year.
There's no reason for this bathroom to be on it's own zone and the thermostat in there has been shut off since it stays within a degree or so of the rest of the house (I turned it off because someone cranked it up to like 80 one night and the boiler was running way more than usual until I discovered why). I'm not sure what to do with this zone. If I leave it off is there any issue with water not circulating through it? Can I wire it so the circulating pump for this zone runs when zone 1 does and if I can do that is it even worth it to do? Here are the specs:

GFCI outlets tripped in entire house
Asking for a friend. Just bought a new house (built in 2006) in southwest Oklahoma. Moving in today.
Every GFCI outlet in the house is tripped and cannot be reset. What would cause this? Also, it's not all on the same circuit so it's not a particular circuit giving problems. It's got GFCI outlets in the kitchen, garage, and two bathrooms and all are tripped and cannot be reset.

Odd Foundation wall in new home
So we bought a split-entry house that was built in 67 and it has those half height foundation walls in the basement (3' tall). Well today as I was getting some stuff ready to paint I noticed in the family room one wall of that half height basement wall bows/curves in. It has one vertical settling crack in it, but the inspector didn't think that was an issue. I nor the inspector noticed the curved wall (or at least he didn't mention it). I didn't notice it at the time either
Basically if I look down the wall it seems the base of the concrete part of the wall curves about 1.5 to 2" into the room before it goes back to normal at the opposing corner. I can't tell if the top is just as bowed.. doesn't seem to be.
So basically if you start at one end and and follow the wall it curves into the room about an inch or two in the middle and back out to the other end (so both ends are even and the middle is into the room about an inch-ish). The linoleum which is a beautiful 80s yellow blocky pattern is cut to the curve so lines on the floor make the curve look even worse because they disappear into the curve. The slab floor doesn't seem to be impacted at all.
I have only owned this house for a week now, but am a bit sick about this. Should I call someone in? or is this something I should just accept or can I Do anything?

Phone DSL Wiring question - TWISTED PAIRS
I had an internet issue today. I moved a jack to bring my wireless router/modem closer to my PC. After installing the jack worked fine for phone but I couldn't connect to web. Moving it back to the old location, I was able to connect fine. So I called ATT (its Uverse internet) and they confirmed that it was a phone wiring issue.
Knowing that when I wired the phones, the phone company signal comes in on two - two wire twisted pair. That is, I have dial tone on two pairs.
Is one for internet and one for phone?
When I moved the modem to the new location, I believe that jack was controlled by the other twisted pair that supplies the jack where the modem usually sits.

2004 Impala Evap Canister Solenoid
I am looking for an evap canister solenoid for my 2004 Impala. This is the part that is located right next to the fuel fill spout. I can't seem to find the right one at any online part stores. If anyone knows where I can find one please let me know.
Also, I unhooked the one that is on the car now and it fixed my problem. But I'm concerned that leaving the vent hose dangling under the car could be dangerous with the fumes and such. Any thoughts?
The issue was that I had a hard time filling the car with gas because the solenoid was not opening there fore the tank was not vented.

Rehabbing stairs, need opinions on how to trim them out
Rehabbing the stairs to my basement, going from carpeted to hardwood. Going to use a re-tread product (like the ones at Lowes)
I have a question on how to trim out the stairs before installing the treads. The existing treads are 2x dadoed into the stringers. The nose of each tread comes out past the edge of the stringer (pics below). To leave them as-is I would have to notch every new tread on both sides to accomodate. Seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me.
What Im thinking is to cut the extra wood off the nose of the treads so the replacement treads can be cut straight from nose to riser. The pics below are one side of a tread with the extra cut flush and one side with the tread as it is right now.
If cutting the extra off is the way to go, the space that needs to be filled without the extra "nose" is 1-1/4". I was thinking of stacking 2 base moldings, one taller than the other. Any other ideas for that?
Or is the best way just to notch the new treads? I was worried that would look funny though, since there would be no "skirt" to butt it up against where it overhangs the existing nose.
Pouring Foundation Under Existing Room
So long story short, the people who owned the home before me had a deck. They converted the deck to a partially finished sunroom that looked like crap, so I decided to remodel it and make it a nursery for our second little one due in March.
It's held up right now by (what look like) 3 4x12 posts....no concrete...just straight into the earth.
I plan to dig around the exterior of the room, and pour an actual foundation. Then use cinder blocks to go up to the sill, and then use rock fascia over the cinder blocks.
Surprisingly, the room is level. It hasn't sunk at all due to the poor foundation (maybe because it's only 90 sq ft) I live in Charlotte, NC, so I had a few questions.
How deep should I dig the trench for the footings? I know up north it's a minimum of 42", but have no idea what it is down here in the south. Do I need to reinforce the concrete with anything? I plan to just leave the posts in place, slightly jack up the room to get the cinder blocks under there and then put it back down.
I have a question about licensing please if anyone would be so kind as to please help

Acceleration help
Hi.
My name is Milan. My English is not too good but i hope that you will understand me and provide help.
I want to correct accelerator pedal signal. signal voltage range is from 0.98V depressed to 4.5V full pressed pedal.
input voltage is 5v. when i hard step on the pedal, voltage jump is very instant and car hesitates. is it possible to make some simple electronics device to correct signal and slow down voltage jump or reduce rising to some point like 1.5V and than allow exponentially rising of voltage like without a device. i was attached picture of what i want to accomplish.
Any idea? Using transistor or FET in circuit or something else? Any example? Thanks in advance! Attachment 43133 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/passenger-cars-suv-service-repairs-no-trucks/43133-acceleration-help-acceleration.jpg)
Doing my first house remodel, questions regarding sink supply lines
Hello everyone, my we have recently purchased a house which was supposed to be move-in ready but with the discovery of knob-and-tube wiring, we needed to start doing renovations. While doing renovations, I didn't like the layout of the main bathroom.
There was no storage space at all and it had an almond colored pedestal sink. While removing the wallpaper in the bathroom, some of the drywall was damaged in the process so I decided to remove the sink and do it properly.
Upon removing the sink, we looked around and found a very sleek sink at Rona with a cabinet and that would give us some space back.
The vanity cabinet has an opening in the rear but the bottom has a complete piece without any holes. Now after searching google, I've seen that most houses will have the sink supply lines on the wall and not coming up from the floor.
To install this sink I will need to cut the lines below the plastic drain pipe, install the sink and re-solder them back.
Remote 3 way switches?
Hello.
I have a detached garage about 75' from the house which has flood lights, and of course the house does as well. I want to connect the flood lights on both structures so I can turn them on/off from either building. So at night I can turn them on from the house, walk to the garage, and turn them off, and vice/versa. It is possible for me to run a hard wire to do this with a standard 3-way/4-way switch configuration, but I've been told that it can be done with radio frequency switches that operate wirelessly without travelers. Is this true? Can somebody in the know fill me in on the details?
To clarify, the house has a simple switch at one location only. The garage has 2 locations for the lights using 3-way switches. I imagine I might have to replace both of those switches to wireless switches? There are two floods on the garage that face toward the house, and one on the house that faces the garage, so all 3 lights would come on together.
Thanks much!

York Diamond 80 Bad Pressure Switch?
I came home to no heat from my York Diamond 80 (P4HUC20N09201A - upflow/horizontal) furnace. The diagnostics control was flashing 2 red lights which the manual indicates is an issue with the pressure switch: "This indicates that the normally open pressure switch contact are stuck in the closed position. The control confirms these contacts are open at the beginning of heat cycle. This would indicate a faulty pressure switch or mis-wiring." I found the following thread (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/gas-oil-home-heating-furnaces/157768-furnace-not-coming.html) and tapped/smacked the pressure switch a few times and the furnace fired up and it is working fine. I read several threads on various forums that indicate the pressure switch is rarely bad. Should I replace the switch or wait for it to happen again (e.g. assume anomaly?) If so, where do I get the part number from? The previous owners documentation is from Source1 HVAC Service Parts but it is of the P4DN series (not sure why they have that if the furnace is P4HU...).
Thanks for help in advance.

Why Did My Garage Remotes Stop Working?
Can someone help me figure out how to get my garage remotes working again? The problem is not with the remotes. Here are all the facts:
1) both remotes and the keypad stopped working at the same time.
2) I put new batteries in the remotes just to check to see if that could be the problem, but they still did not work.
3) I tried reprogramming the remotes and resetting everything, (pushing the green button on the opener, etc) but they still don't work. They don't reprogram like they use to.
4) the garage door still works fine when Ipush the main button on the wall.
5) nothing is blocking the eye sensors in the door area.
6) the antenna has a meter charge; and the remotes still don't work when placed right near the antenna.
7) It's a craftsman garage opener and the part # on the back for the panel is 41a315-7d.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Should I try to fix something on the logic board? Should I buy a new logic board? Or is there something else I'm missing here?

Wired Concrete Block in Basement
I'm contemplating finishing the basement of the house in which I'm currently living. The basement is currently just concrete block, it was waterproofed on the outside a few years ago and I recently painted it all with two coats of UGL Drylok. One potential problem I'm having is what should I do with the current wiring. The previous home owner who built the home wired the block I assume with no thoughts of ever finishing the basement. What would need to be done with this wiring so that I may frame and have someone come and wire that basement so that the boxes are flush with the framing?
Thank you for you help, just trying to figure out any pitfalls before starting any projects down there.

Ditching the dish; seeking OTA acvice
I ordered my directtv disconnected today and I'm going OTA. I tested the 30-odd year old pre-digital TV antenna and got even more channels, in HD no less, that I had hoped for. Enough, in fact, to make Mama happy (on balance, in light of the $100 a month savings). But I need some advice from folks with antenna TV experience.
#1, Am I saving myself long-term heartache if I replace the twin lead cable (which runs from the wingnut terminals on the antenna and terminates in the living room) with coax. IOW, coax all the way from the antenna into the house? On the one hand, back in the stone ages, the twin lead cable was always the weak link in the system. OTOH, it's survived as is at least 20 years, and if I disconnect it, I'll never get all the corrosion on the connectors lined up as perfectly as it is now, so why mess widdit? Yes? No? Maybe?
#2, Is there a rule of thumb regarding how far OTA signal can travel by cable before an amplifier is necessary? From the top of the antenna to the furthest TVs, I'm looking at a cable run of about 100 feet. I intend buying the digital-audio converters online, and if an amplifier is likely to be necessary, I'll just throw one in to save on the shipping.
Tips and advice also are welcome.

Mold/Mildew on Xmas Misfit toys- HELP!
Hi,
Any advice for cleaning my "seasonal" stuffed critters? They have some visible black mold/mildew on them (mostly on the cardboard tags) but clearly should be tossed if were to be used by children or in a bedroom, etc... Wonder if would be salvageable to place on a table if washed properly in some type of ?vinegar solution or hot water then in the dryer or somehow? I can't dry in sun as in Boston and it's pretty COLD here now (likely would freeze) Stored them in plastic bag in supposedly dry basement- not sure WHAT happened??? Need to toss Everything in the bag now due to this finding- such a shame! Lots of nice items. Looked in other bags and similar findings in "some" other bags but not all of them~ Grrr. Attachment 42924 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/electrical-ac-dc/42924-gurgling-conduit-img_20141115_142514662.jpg)
About a week ago, I was checking the six fuses in my garage, because a freezer stopped running, and I was getting ~13V to a few of the fuse sockets, and 120V to the rest. Confused, I reset the "garage" breaker in the house, re-measured, and was getting 120V to the fuse sockets again, so I shrugged it off.
I went out in the garage tonight to finish up labeling the fuse-box, and I heard noises coming from its vicinity. After banging around the area with a board to scare away any animal that might be making the noise, the noise continued.

FMC vs AC/BX
Can someone tell me if there is a difference in terms of code between Flexible Metal Conduit and Armoured Cable? I've got a very short run (about 2') of AC and I like the idea of an FMC rather than AC as it'll be easier to cut. It's just a run of 14\2.
Thanks!
Thinking about removing gas fireplace
I would like some opinions here, as there are so many factors ive read about.
Our living room is fairly big (Compared to our last house), but has a large bay type window on the front facing wall next to the front door, then the right wall has the staircase, and coat closet, and then the left wall has a fireplace thats taking up ALOT of space.
Ideally, I would love this wall to be open to put a large entertainment center, and my TV, while having a sectional couch along the wall parallel to it.
My inspector told me that for this fireplace to be used, some of the bricks/mortar inside would need to be replaced, along with basically the whole gas setup that sits inside. The gas to the fireplace is off at the meter i'm assuming, as there is no gas coming in the box.
The bricks and mantle of the fireplace stick out about 12-14" from the wall, and the whole setup is VERY outdated. (We are young, and prefer more of a modern style)

Propane Piping
Need some help with propane pipe sizing on a new construction.
In Arizona at about 7,000 ft elevation.
Will be using 2 - 100# propage tanks connected to a Camco Automatic Changeover 2-Stage Propane Regulator for Dual Propane Tanks.
Will be using black pipe throughout but not sure on the sizing. Here is a image of what we are planning:

scratches in a stainless steel refrigerator
We own a Frigidaire refrigerator a lot like this one:
Frigidaire Professional 22.4 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth French Door Refrigerator FPHG2399PF (http://www.frigidaire.com/Kitchen-Appliances/Refrigerators/French-Door-Refrigerator/FPHG2399PF/)
It's one with stainless steel doors and handles. We've been diligent about polishing it with stainless steel polish. Recently we've discovered some scratches on the handle and one on one of the doors. Polishing over them with the stainless steel polish doesn't do any good. I'm wondering if there's some type of tool or technique I could use to buff out these scratches. I don't want to do it wrong and screw it up worse. I think the doors themselves have some kind of coating over the stainless steel. The handles may not have that. I'm not sure.
Any advice on getting rid of these scratches is appreciated. There are also scratches on our similar stainless steel dish washer.

Navien 240 Combi Whistling Noise
Hi all, just installed a Navian 240 Combination boiler/H2O tank on propane. Works great. BUT.. every time it fires up for water or heat, there is a loud, high-pitched resonation. Techs redid the gas piping to increase from 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch and (supposedly) checked and set the pressures.
I've seen this issue posted a lot (YouTube has a couple of great videos that play the sound exactly) but haven't even seen a solution, rather kind of a lot of 'try this'. Does anyone have direct experience with what worked? It's tough living in the middle of a tea-kettle whistle. :o
Many thanks... and all good things to everyone in the New Year.

Split Bus Panel
Hi All
A few questions about Split Bus Panels. Looking at finishing a residental basement. Located in NJ.
House has a split bus panel which is a Murray. The panel has 4 double pole breakers in the top half in the service disconnect area. They are 40amp (range), 40amp (AC), 30 amp (dryer - not used) and 60amp (Lighting+everything else). House also has a redundant hot water circuit on a separate meter (not live).
The lower branch section has around 8 breaker positions - top six will take 1/2" according to the panel label. Furnace is NG. 70amp breaker rating max for the entire panel.
First question: The panel says 125 amps load for the top positions. Installed breakers total 170amps currently. I've read various discussions around whether the total of the breakers in the upper section can exceed the panel rating or not. A rough load calc says its currently ok but clearly if everything was used to the max rating on the installed breakers it would exceed 125 amps. What is the correct approach here ?
Outdoor wire labels or marking tape, UV resistant??
Hello,
Can anyone recommend any wire labels that can be used outdoors (UV and water resistant)?
Otherwise, is the standard Utilitech multi colored tape sufficient for outdoors? As seen HERE (http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=291607-16878-54794&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3659364&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1).
We have a lot of flexible SOOW outdoor cord at work and I'd like to label those for identification purposes. The Utilitech tape would be fine but I've never used that outdoors so I don't know how long it would last prior to fading? I'd like something that would last at least two years.
I'd most prefer some multi colored tape which is numbered so I could correspond it with the Panel breakers....

Furnace Common Wire
The old circuit board for my furnace had a relay that was sticking so I got a new board that doesnt have a C connector (my old board did have a common wire hookup right on the board). The new board works fine but Id like a C line to wire to my thermostat (my thermostat is cycling my furnace fan off/on and causing the furnace to click and not turn on the heat). Where can I connect a common wire to this new board? The board model number is B1809913.

Pull Common from TACO Zone Valve or xfrmr for Wifi Tstat
Like a zillion others in this forum, I need a C for my HW RTH9580. I was looking at some schematics for pulling C from the zone valve xfrmr. My wiring looks wrong. My understanding is that the TACO 571 has the xfrmr Common daisy-chained between the middle pins of the 571's and the xfrmr LOAD (R) would run to the Tstats RH pins. Bottom line is that I need a C and not sure how to get their based on my wiring. No extra wires in the system but can pull whatever is needed.

Reusing granite after kitchen island failed.
I was trying to do a moveable island that could slide into the corner when not in use but the plywood underneath the feet didn't handle the weight good so it collapsed. :o
After repairing it I moved those same cabinets against the corner and attached them to the wall. The whole set of cabinets has 1/2 hardiboard all around ( was going to do a tile design on island) and it is attached to the wall via metal L shaped an corner plates. In most of the places with the l shaped and corner a hardiboard screw goes into the stud currently.
Now I have a 1/2" plywood followed by 1/2" hardiboard and then 1/2" granite that was being designed for a moveable island but will now hang off 10" past the edge of the cabinets. Do I need to support this even more underneath the counters? Its about 98"Lx 34"W.

Samsung bottom freezer Mod. # RB195ACBP/ XAA
The door ajar alarm will not reset. It's constantly beeping. Beeps 11 times every 50 seconds. Some background: The fridge sat in my garage for over a year, with both doors off. When we decided to bring it upstairs, we cleaned it, plugged it in, put the doors on and the beeping hasn't stopped since. Both fridge and freezer door seals are in excellent condition. I tried resetting the control panel by holding both the Power Freeze and Power Cool to no avail. Any Owners manual I've been able to find online has been no help. Am I over-looking something simple? I'd be happy if I could just snip a wire and silence the beeps.
Wood panel over sheetrock - recessed electrical boxes
I have a room where the previous owner had turned into a "library". Built in bookshelves, wood paneling all over.
I removed one of the switch covers and noticed the panelling was installed over the sheetrock, and therefore the electrical box sits far back from the finished wall. I assume it's the same for all the boxes in this room.
Box is metal with conduits. They cut the rectangular hole smaller than I expected, so that the device mounting holes on the mud ring are covered up.
Image: http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w67/143house/11th/IMAG1756_zps8f6c079f.jpg
So they used tapered wood screws to mount the switches on the thin wood panels instead.

Whole house humidifier placement
I moved into a new house and was looking to add a whole house humidifier and upon inspecting the furnace there was a patch where it looked like they placed one before. I removed the patch and filled the airconditioner coil so it appears they added it after the fact. There is no room anywhere else to place. My question is can I place below the coil and just above the furnace? Here is my picture.
