Uponor pipe split

I was in the basement today and noticed the water line that feeds the outdoor hose has split. There was a few drops of water still in the line, which I thought had been bled dry. I am assuming that it froze and split, from the look of the pipe, any ideas? The Uponor is connected to copper, for about the last 6 inches before it goes through the concrete wall. The basement is heated.

Any ideas what the problem could be? also are the parts readily available for this old of an oven? And about how much are replacement parts for this issue? Thank you very much!

No water

Hello yall, Im new to the well system and how it works so bare with me. I have no water pressure and I have no idea what may be causing this. I thought it was the pressure switch so I replaced it but the problem continues. If i connect the pump directly to the breaker it will pump water all day but as soon as i connect the pressure switch I run out of water. When I switch the breaker off and on I get water for about 10-15 minutes and loose pressure again. I would really apreciate any help. Thanks.

Food Truck Compressor

Hi there, I apologize if this is in the wrong thread, but here goes :P I recently bought a food truck and the compressor works fine. Gets the cooler/freezer cold when plugged into shore power. The previous owner said that they would also run on the deep cell batteries that are stored in the rear of the truck. My question is, why doesn't the compressor kick on when I turn on the Main Power switch on the front panel when not plugged in to shore power? A friend of mine said that it could be bc it's not level, but its not on the much of an angle at all.

Boiler: replace vs. clean (symptoms of cracked heat exchanger?)

I realize "doityourself.com" might not be the best place to ask about opinions regarding professional help, but this is the most knowledgeable place about boilers that I can find on the Internet, so here goes... Boiler: Peerless MI 06 / ~18 years old / ~140K BTU Basic questions (full details/story below the pics): 1) If I have a cracked heat exchanger, is it possible/probable that my boiler just needs a major cleaning vs. replacement? 2) Are the symptoms of a dirty boiler/filter/etc similar to those of a cracked exchanger? (e.g., "soot" residue on floor below unit, flame coming out from below part of unit) 3) Does $1,500 sound like a reasonable major cleaning estimate for a boiler of this type, size, vintage? Grounding rod conductor dimensions for 200amp service

Hi, I'm trying to understand Section 250.66 of the NEC 2014 (National Electrical Code) document for how to connect the ground of an electrical service to the electrode system. So basically it says in Table 250.66 if I'm using 4/0 Aluminum wire to supply my 200Amp service and there is is a feeder between the Service Disconnect and the Breaker Panel that is 20 feet away (i'm using my case for an example), then the ground conductor in that bundle needs to be AWG #2 size (aluminum). If I'm connecting the Service Disconnect panel ground bus to a grounding electrode system (ground rod or grounded metal water main), then that conductor never has to be thicker than AWG #6 Copper per 250.66.A. Am I understanding this right?

Discovered Watery/Black Liquid on Honeywell Ignition

I came here to post about a Taco 007-F4 circulator that I thought may be leaking but when visiting my boiler again for a model # found a few drops of what I think was water on the Honeywell Ignition which I had previously wiped up earlier. I felt around on the circulator which is above the ignition and it was bone dry. I looked at other pipes above and nothing was leaking. Could the honeywell itself be causing this? I'm a homeowner who doesn't have a background in this. Everything seems to be working normally as far as heating the house. i wouldn't have discovered this if i wasn't looking for christmas lights The Honeywell is a R8184G4009 Taco Cartridge Circulator 007-F4 Burnham Boiler RS-111 Attachment 42508 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/boilers-home-heating-steam-hot-water-systems/42508-discovered-watery-black-liquid-honeywell-ignition-20141129_212631.jpg) Attachment 42504 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/boilers-home-heating-steam-hot-water-systems/42504-discovered-watery-black-liquid-honeywell-ignition-20141129_212618.jpg)

Water Line Connection to Dishwasher Help Needed

Hello, I am trying to install a Whirlpool dishwasher and have encountered a problem that I can't find the solution for online. The water line is plastic tubing that extends from under the cabinet's wall. I can't access the point of contact with the main water line. The previous dishwasher was connected to this plastic water line. However, I cannot get the plastic line to adequately attach to the new dishwasher. I put on a compression fitting (3/8in) and attached it, but water shoots out of the back of the fitting. The 3/8 inch sleeve does not fit the plastic piping so I tried using the brass ferrinule. No success. Can anyone recommend a good fitting? Or a trick that I'm not thinking of? Attached is a pic of the red water line connected to my house and the other is a braided line connected to the dishwasher.Attachment 42498 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/toilets-sinks-showers-dishwashers-tubs-garbage-disposals/42498-water-line-connection-dishwasher-help-needed-imag0107.jpg)Attachment 42499 (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/attachments/toilets-sinks-showers-dishwashers-tubs-garbage-disposals/42499-water-line-connection-dishwasher-help-needed-imag0108.jpg)

Question which is a better top loader clothes washer with or without agitator?

Hi, I am in HI and want to get a clothes washer. I like front loading but the cost is much more than the others. I am now considering top loaders. I see now there are HE models that do not have an agitator. A sales person at Sears said that they try not to sell these since they don't clean clothes well enough. I see good prices for ones with agitators and there is a Maytag on sale for $400 without an agitator. I want one that will wash clothes well and last a long time.

ultraply & underlayment staple question

I plan to install UltraplyXL 1/4" underlayment over a plywood subfloor. The manufacturer recommends staple with 7/8" leg & 3/8" crown. Searching for an electric staple gun that handles this staple has yielded one cordless tool which is unavailable and would cost close to $500.00. My questions are: Can I move up to a 1/2" crown staple? Will a 9/16" leg staple be long enough? I'm a do-it-yourselfer so would prefer not to spend a lot for a tool I will use once. Thank you,

Well Pump not building pressure

Hey everybody, I'm a journeyman plumber in the state of Montana, and I have a real head scratcher on my hands. I installed a well pump and pressure tank at one of my customer's houses a few days ago. I have been working on systems like this for ten years, so not my first rodeo. Everything that could go wrong went wrong in the process. The new pressure tank had a problem from the factory and had a leak, so I replaced it. But the pump itself is baffling me. The customer had an old Sears pump, 1/2 horse shallow well with 115v power supply connected to a 30/50 pressure switch. The reason for replacing these things is the pump is 20 yrs old, the pressure tank 12 yrs old and the pressure tank's bladder had failed. The customer figured why not replace the whole thing. I replaced the pressure tank and set the psi in the tank to 28 lbs, considering the 30/50 pressure switch. I then replaced the Sears pump with a Meyers 1/2 horse that was factory preset to 115v. The pump ran exactly one time. When I bled the pressure back down to get the air out, the pump would kick on and hum like the impellar was stuck, and then kick out on thermal overload. Whatever, I figured, faulty pump from the factory. Weirder things have happened. I take the pump back, but this time I buy a higher end A.O. Smith pump. Once again, 1/2 horse 115v. Both times they come with a new pressure switch, both of them being 30/50. I install this one, and it works. Bleed the air out, it turns on at 30, off at 50. No leaks, no drips, no errors. A day later, the customer calls me. The pump won't shut off. I run out to his house and find that the pump will only build about 38 lbs. of pressure in the system. Now I'm blown away. Why would it work for a day and then not be able to build the pressure? I put a gauge on the pump as it's running and it's producing 30 lbs. of pressure as it is running. I attempt to bleed any air out of the system, there isn't any. So I figure, maybe that pump is faulty too. It happens to be Thanksgiving, so no parts supply houses open, at least not for a reasonable amount of $. So I take his old pump, which was working fine, and install it to get him through the weekend till I can get a new pump. I install it and it works fine. This time, however, I set the cut out pressure a little lower, to 45 lbs., figuring that should get him through the weekend. Now he calls me this morning, a day later, and once again, the pump system will only produce about 33 lbs. of pressure and won't shut off.:madhell:

York Diamond 80 Model P4HUB12N08001A

We live in a rural community and this past week were having a problem with the gas pressure from our well. Atlas came out and fixed it yesterday. Last night, the furnace went caput. I've got juice to the furnace and to the leads that connect to the motherboard. I have no lights lighted on the motherboard. We just had the board replace approximately 2 years ago... I tried resetting the board by turning off power for 10 seconds. no activity. Jumpered the thermostat, and still nothing. Thermostat appears to be working. One of the boards mentioned a purple fuse. I can not find it. Any suggestions? Thanks Terry

Rodent in drain?

I live in arizona. Last night it got cold, and I started hearing scratching noises from my laundry room. I couldn't find anything, and I personally sealed any holes in the laundry room last Feb, so I assume it was something crawling up one of the drains. So i ran the washer and dryer about 10 mins, and I didnt hear any more scratching. I thought the issue was fixed, but just a few hours ago tonight I was using the downstairs bathroom when i heard the same noise coming from a wall the bathroom shares with the laundry room. I assume this bathroom shares the same drain with the laundry room. I ran the faucet and flushed the toilet for 10 mins, and I havent heard the scratching again. Could a rodent be coming up the drain at night when it gets cold out? Is there poison like Drano i would put down the drain to kill it? Last year I had 2 scorpions come up the kitchen sink. In the morning i found them trying to crawl up the stainless steal sink but couldnt. Ive never figured out how to fix the issue. I've thoroughly gone through myhouse and sealed any cracks.

4'-6" x 21'-3" Bump out-on piers?

I want to create a bump out on the first floor of my house in order to create enough space for two bedrooms where there is currently a large living room (that will be moved elsewhere). The bump out would need to project 4'-6" from the foundation wall, so while cantilevering might be a possibility, it would be too problematic in my opinion for a couple of reasons. First, because as I understand it, 2' of cantilever is usually considered the maximum for a bump out anyway. Second, even if it could be cantilevered, I'd need 9' of joist inside the foundation which would be a project in and of itself due to the fact that the basement underneath is fully finished with sheetrock ceilings and recessed lighting, not to mention other wiring and ductwork which is in the joist bays. Basically, what I would propose would be to lag bolt a ledger to the rim joist and frame out the platform for the floor which would be supported by a pressure treated girder and whatever number of concrete columns was determined to be appropriate. The top of the foundation wall is about 36" above grade and I figure a ganged 2x12 would be used for a girder, so the piers would not need to extend far above grade. Frost depth for my area (NJ) is 48". There would be nothing in the bumped out portion of the walls, floor, or ceiling such as wiring, ductwork, plumbing, etc...and the bump out would be a single story with a simple gable roof on top that would connect with the existing gable roof (running perpendicular). Would this be a common solution to an "addition" such as this? 2x12 floor joists would allow for R-30 fiberglass batts in the joist bays, and rigid foam could be used on the underside as well, so I'm not worried about the bedrooms being cold. The piers could be easily hid with landscaping. Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Water leaking out around tub faucet handles

My home was built in 2002. This is a Jacuzzi tub (if that matters) with cheapo Delta faucet. A year or so ago the cold water faucet handle started leaking. The water seeps out around the handle (see photo). It only leaks at a certain point- meaning if I keep the pressure very low, just turning it on a little bit, it doesn't leak. But the harder I turn it on the more water seeps out. The hot water faucet handle has now started to develop the same leak. I went as far as I could but I'm not sure what else to do. I have NO plumbing skills so if you offer advice please dumb it down for me :) I'm not even sure I'm using proper terminology... anyway, I took off the plastic little lid of the faucet (see photo) and this exposed a screw- I then unscrewed that and off came that clear acrylic faucet knob. Now I'm not sure what to do from here. I have a feeling it is just a worn washer but how do I get to it? You can also see from the photo that there is standing water there from last night's bath. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! Is this a good Unit and great price for Carrier Gas Furnace?

Carrier is responsible for parts and labor for the fix do to a class action suit. 1.Carrier 15-20 years old 2.Model 58MXA06012 I have two options. 1.Carrier will pay all costs to R&R the secondary heat exchanger which should resolve problem. Considerations: It is a 15-20 year old unit. Other than the plastic box that the condensate line connects to (I replaced) we have had no problems with the unit.

oxidation on copper

I had an issue with moisture getting into my electrical panel. I found a tiny bit of oxidation on the neutral wire that is terminated in the neutral lug. It appeared as green on the tips of the strands of the wire. There is no corrosion however where the lug screw meets the wire. I have not had any apparent problems with my electric otherwise. As for the moisture, I think I have rectified any possible causes by sealing the conduit entering the panel. Fixing the driploop on my weatherhead and I have also started running a dehumidifier in the summer months in case its a condensation issue. I did not call an electrician to reterminate the wire though. If I have someone out right away, I fear if I did not correct the problem then it would occur again. And if I had already had an electrician re-terminate that wire, then there would likely not be enough slack in the wire to do so a second time without replacement of the feeder. So my question, should I be concerned than there is a bit of green on my copper? If the moisture is removed, does the copper continue to oxidize? I was thinking the neutral outside is bare and green from the weatherhead all the way to the transformer but I know that's not the same as being inside my equipment. What do you think?

Leak in Heat Exchanger

I have a American Standard Gas Furnace. Model # AUX1C100A9481AB. I started receiving a pressure switch error and after doing all the basic checks I couldn't figure out what was going on so I called a professional. After 5 hours of troubleshooting, the technician was finally able to determine what the problem was. He performed the "water test" and found that water was leaking out of the secondary heat exchanger above the blower deck. The breach was causing the pressure differential to be 1.41 on a 1.4 IWC rated pressure switch which wasn't enough to "make" the switch. I have a few questions: 1) Does this make sense? The technician suggested I would need to replace both the primary and secondary heat exchanger. 2) How much should this cost? The furnace is still under parts warranty. 3) Am I better off replacing the entire furnace or replacing the heat exchanger? Thanks in advance for your help.

thinking about installing ceiling pot rack

I've been thinking about adding a ceiling-mounted pot rack to my kitchen. My ceiling is only about 7 1/2 feet high and I know that presents some limitations regarding pot racks. Clearly, I need to choose a pot rack that hangs by chains, as opposed to a rigid type of mount, since I have less vertical distance to work with. But, I think I have two potential locations for a pot rack that would be out of the way. One location is over a counter peninsula. The other location is near one side of the kitchen which is out of the path of foot traffic. One question in my mind is, how realistic is the notion of storing lids, etc. on top of a pot rack, in the manner shown in pictures at Storage & Organization : Pot Racks | Hayneedle.com (http://www.hayneedle.com/kitchen-and-dining/pot-racks_list_187528#N%3D761+4295158769+4295158769+4295158770%26view%3D48%26display%3Dlist_view%26pageNumber%3D1) ? As I see this, hanging a pot rack at a normal height, in terms of hanging pans, skillets, etc. on the hooks on the bottom means that a stepping stool would probably be necessary to use the top of the rack for storage of lids. Therefore, using the top seems impractical or simply infeasible. So, lids would need to be stored separate from the pans and skillets. Is my thinking clear and correct on this?

Vinyl planks, plywood, and carpet insulation

Hi everyone, I am new to the site and just started my first home project. I have a 2nd floor 16x12 foot bedroom that had a carpet. I removed the carpet and insulation and currently working on tightning some squeaky areas. I am thinking of installing vinyl planks in this room, but have a concern about noise being transmitted to downstairs, mainly as a result of walking on the new floor. I don't have insulation between the floors, and would like to avoid dealing with that. I thought about keeping the carpet insulation (and perhaps even the carpet as well), and installing thin plywood on top of the carpet, then installing the vinyl planks on top of the plywood. My thinking is that having the carpet insulation layer will reduce the walking noise transferred to downstairs. I would appreciate any advice or thoughts on this. Thanks!

Handheld GPS ideas/suggestions, please.

Within the next 6 months or so I want to purchase a hand-held GPS for hiking and such. Have experience with Garmin GPS for cars only. Also Iphone GPS but I want a designated GPS for hiking, kayak fishing, backwoods fishing, etc. I assume that I won’t need a compass as the GPS will also incorporate a compass or am I wrong? Haven’t looked at GPS units other than on-line yet. I’ve seen re-furbished GPS units; as a cheap guy I like that idea, but as a guy with terrible sense of direction I don’t like it. I want: Simplicity above all. Would like to pay less than $300. Don’t mind carrying extra batteries.

parquetry flooring faults

Hi, Does anyone have any comment on how long it takes for faults/damage due to change in humidity in flooring to show?... clearly it does depend on the weather, but due to the circumstances outlined in the next paragraph I am looking for something more. :) We purchased a property and laid a floor in 2010. Sold it in 2012. The new owner has complaints (which under Finnish law, we now have to respond to:mad:) that the floor was incorrectly laid.....We have a different opinion as we owned the flat for two years and saw no sign of buckling, cracking or any other problem, which could be explained by it being laid incorrectly. Thank you in advance.

Carrier Weathermaker 8000 blow cold air

Hi professionals, My furnace starts only blowing cold air since this morning. I noticed there has a strange noise from the furnace in the past few days. I did open the panel and tried to see where the noise came from. It seems like it is from the inducer motor. So I ignored it since it was still working. Until this morning, I opened the panel again, and the inducer motor seems not running at all. I read the manual and it mentions there has LED signal reading, it has 3 short flashes and 1 long flash. Now the weather is getting cold and I really hope to get it resolves without paying a hefty fee. With the LED signals and the inducer motor not running, does it mean I can simply replace the inducer motor and it should fix the problem??? Thanks in advance for your advice.:)

Help replacing corroded bathtub spout

Hello, a few weeks ago, the spout to my bathtub fell off and I couldn't seem to screw it back on. I took a look and the threads of the galvanized outlet have essentially rusted off. I took a pipe wrench to it and it didn't budge one bit. I'm afraid of forcing it in case I break the pipe in the wall. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to replace it? Thanks. Tigerloop ultra s-220 with spin on filter problem

I have a beckett oil furnace and recently added a new above ground tank and installed a tiger loop ultra with 10 micron spin on filter. The problem is the 10 micron tall filter is too big and the oil pump on the furnace can't pull enough oil through it. I had to fill the filter with oil to the brim first and then install the filter. The furnace would run until the oil in the filter goes down to half and then lockout would occur. I pulled the filter and it was 3/4 full. I am getting plenty of oil into the tiger loop I can see it coming in, but it's not fast enough to fill the filter and then go to the pump without causing a lockout to occur. Should I get a shorter smaller spin on filter or get another tiger loop with no filter and attach a separate filter. No oil leaks was found in the system. I had an oil tech checked it and said it's the filter.

Carrier Weathermaker SX won't ignite pilot

I am having issues troubleshooting my Carrier Weathermaker SX, model #58SXA060-GG Series 100. About 60% of the time when my thermostat calls for heat I don't get any spark to my pilot. When it does NOT light, my inducer motor will start and run, I hear a click that comes from my HSC ignitor/lockout control (part number: LH33WZ513A), then I loose my 24v to my pressure switch and it will eventually shut everything off. I have checked both of my intake and exhaust pipes for debris, they are clean. I have checked all of the drain tubing and cleaned out the drain trap, it is clean. While the inducer motor is running, I can ohm the pressure switch to make sure it is closing and it does. It stays closed, even after I hear the click from the ILO, it is still closed. So far what I know, is that when my thermostat calls for heat, I have 24v coming from "W" to my ILO going into pin 5, then when my pilot does NOT light I hear a click and loose 24v at pin 1 of my ILO. I am guessing I am hearing my 5-minute lockout timer open when that is happening. I believe that my ILO is failing, but because I am not a HVAC tech, I would love a second opinion on this matter, and have someone tell me if there is something down stream, maybe a faulty ground or connection some place else that could be causing my ILO to open and not produce a spark. I also know that if I jump 24v to the c terminal of the pressure switch, basically bypassing the the 5-minute lockout, my pilot will light, my main gas valve will open and my main burner will light, at that point I can take my jumper wire off of the "C" terminal of the pressure switch and the furnace will run until my desired temp. Any information on this would be much appreciated.

Changed a light fitting, Now another trip switched has stopped working.

Hey everyone, I was switching out the light fittings in the front room of our flat (the one it came with is disgusting!) and I put the new one in like for like. There is one cable from the ceiling with a Blue (N), a Brown (L), and a Green/Yellow (E) wire coming from it. These were going into connector blocks fitting corresponding Blue, Brown and Green/Yellow wires to the old fitting. I took this out, fitted a new connector block, and connected like for like wires again for Live, Neutral and Earth and secured the fitting. I flip the switch. TADA! New lights work. Great. I then wander to the back of the flat and turn my bedroom light on... nothing, try the bathroom, nothing... second bedroom... nothing. The hallway works (weirdly because I swear it was on the same breaker switch as the back rooms!) When looking at the breaker BEFORE I started, I have 3 switches. One did the front of the flat, One did the back (and hallway I'm pretty certain), and the 3rd didn't seem to do anything. Either way I switched them all off.

Water Heater Manufacturers - True Parts and Service Networks?

I'm posting below a nightmare experience I had with a Rheem water heater but I read a review on Consumersearch.com that mentions that Whirlpool also has parts and repair service availability issues. My horror story is just an example to illustrate a question I have: *Do water heater manufacturers have true service networks by which I mean both authorized service contractors and parts distribution? * *Are water heaters sold almost exclusively on price - is it so competitive that manufacturers are not willing to bear the expense of good service availability?* _Here's my story_: Water heater died two days before Thanksgiving. Knowing I had guests coming for Thanksgiving dinner, I bought a Rheem gas-fired water heater at Home Depot. Installed it (which took me quite a while as I am not a professional plumber). Pilot would not light. Called technical support. They told me they were over-nighting the required part to me to arrive the following day and that a local plumber would call me to schedule installation. Guy never called.

Replacing sidewalk section

I have one section of sidewalk in front of my house that is severely lifted. I already ground the edge myself once but it's time to cut the tree roots underneath and replace. I have done a fair amount of DIY concrete work but I may want to have this done by a pro so it's done fast. About how much would this cost? It's just one 3' section that needs replacing. Also, I see a thin vertical plastic strip embedded between some of the sidewalk sections at the control joint. is this some kind of isolator? I don't think it goes all the way through the slab because I see no movement at these joints. Thanks

Wall Mount Gas Heater Hookup

I just purchased a 30,000 BTU wall mount gas furnace and will be mounting it in my dining room and connecting it to my two 100lb LP tanks located on the opposite wall (outside) about 25 feet away. The tanks currently supply a gas range and there is a Tee with shutoff valve jn the basement ceiling directly below. Question is, can I snake a flexible gas line across the basement ceiling and up to the dining room to the heater or do I need to use rigid pipe? I'm not a plumber, but I know how to plumb more or less. Is this a project I can safely tackle myself or is it best to contract it out to a professional? I'm pretty confident I can do it myself but have never installed a gas appliance before.

Need some help with bathroom walls....

Hi everyone, Thank you in advance for your help. My question, I am going to remodel a rental's bathroom, and the person I have hired is stating we are going to use 1/4 hardiboard for the walls that surround the tub....even though the walls are currently 1/2" thick now...he states that this will allow for a 'better fit' for the tile....(I have purchased porcelain tile)...not sure I understand the reasoning, is this right? I mean, how will the seam look where the tile meets the drywall that is outside of the tub enclosure? Your thoughts? Does this sound like someone that knows what he is talking about? He also wanted to use some type of pre-mixed mastic for the tile, which also, although I have seen it in home improvement stores, don't think that is what we want to use, and I requested he use thin set... Please help me ;)

New Ceiling Light Fixture - No Voltage from box when attached?

Hi All, Newbie here looking for some help. I've replaced a few light fixtures lately with no problems at all, until this one. I'm getting a reading of 120v from hot to neutral, 120v from hot to ground and 0 from neutral to ground. Except when I connect the light fixture the voltages drop to 0. Forgive my complete lack of knowledge on the subject, but basically the light doesn't turn on. I've tested for resistance on the fixture itself and haven't encountered any issues, and also checked the voltage on the fixture itself (which reads 0). I also tried putting the old fixture back on that worked, but it's also experiencing the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adding exterior garage lights

Hello all. I'm new to this site and I just bought my first home recently, and as expected, my DIY list has begun. Thermostat Replacement

Hi, I am new here, I have spent many hours reading here, but cant find exactly what I'm looking for, so please forgive me if this has already been posted... I currently have a Honeywell TH8320U1008 thermostat, it's acting all derpy, the lights go out when you try to change the temperature, the heat stays on for hours, etc. I have been told that I should start with the easiest thing to fix and go from there, so I went and bought a new thermostat, a Honeywell Rth221B1021, it is much smaller, much simpler and cheap. My old thermostat is completely unnecessary in my house, it is too much thermostat for the house. I have heat and AC, no heat pump, no fancy accessories, it is hooked up with 5 wires. Shut of valve replacement guidance

Hi, I am rather new to the plumbing scene for DIY work, and I could use a bit of advice. I am working on a secondary bathroom that has been neglected for years. Eventually I am going to remodel it but for the time being I just want to replace the toilet. So the shut of valve is stuck in the open position and it looks like a piece of junk to begin with. I have already tried to unstick the valve with some liquid grease. However, that didn't work. From some reading I have done the best option seems to be just to replace it. At first I thought I was dealing with a sweated on shut off valve. However, the tube which it is attached to is chrome not copper. From what I can tell the thing is one piece. I pulled back the flashing where the pipe joins the wall and I think this thing is sweated on. On the underneath of the pipe I believe I see a solder bead. Though I could be wrong as I saw some other folks who have had pipes that screwed on. yet I see no threads or evidence of any plumber tape. As I am new to this I would like someone else's opinion that is not as green as I. So my plan is to sweat the pipe off and replace the existing end with a compression valve if there is enough pipe hiding under the existing one. Though I guess I wont be sure until I get the pipe removed then I can see what I have to work with. I am guessing there wont be more than an inch that is hiding under the other pipe. I guess I might end up having to replace what is there with something similar.... Thanks in advance for any advice. Kevin

Bad Receptacle or Something Worse?

I suddenly started experiencing some issues with a set of outlets not working, they would go off and come on randomly for a few hours, then they went out completely. There are a total, I believe, of 4 receptacles, 1 switch and 1 light (the light and one receptacle are on a switch by the door). The problem seems to start at the door around the switch, because the light and receptacle controlled by the switch and the receptacle by the switch are not working. Using my digital voltmeter set to 200A, I was pulling 120v from both (black and white) wires to the (uninsulated) ground the black wire to the white wire get 0v, this was with the switch was in the off position, when I put the switch in the on position the white wires stated 120v and the black dropped to 80v; still 0 between black to white. I replaced the switch, same result. I get the same results on the non-working receptacle connected to the switch. The non-working receptacle not on the switch pulls 120v from all wires to ground regardless of switch position, but gets 0v from black to white wires. It's probably worth noting that the ground wires were disconnected from both the switch and the switch controlled receptacle; but the problem just started and they appeared to have been disconnected for quite a while. The house is about 40 years old, and there are no GFI/GCFI that I'm aware of on this breaker. What would cause the problem and how do I fix it? Thanks, Justin

Roof venting for cathedral type ceiling

Hey all, I need to insulate and fix up a little outbuilding with low joists and make it as simple as possible. It is of simple construction and doesn't have eaves or rakes. If you look at the attachment, picture #1 shows the basic construction. Its walls are structural brick and offers very little insulation. The rafters are open and also have no insulation. So the plan right now is to frame and insulate the walls, then for the ceiling I can add spacers between the sheathing and insulation for airflow. Then I can add a ridge vent. Here's my question: Since it doesn't have soffits, can I create a protected vent in the fascia board and expect the same effect? Or does the air need to come up underneath and into a proper soffit vent to work properly? I might add a proper soffit in the future, but just wondering if this will be effective in the meantime? Thanks for any feedback.

Enlarging faucet hole in concrete countertop

Hi all, I recently replaced my kitchen faucet. All went well except that the new soap pump doesn't quite fit into the old pump hole. I need to enlarge the existing 1" diameter hole to 1 1/8". Only the top 1/4" needs to be enlarged and I could make it up to 1 1/2" diameter if I had to. I don't think I'll need to, but there is some room for the enlargement to not be a perfect circle. The countertop is concrete with small quartz aggregate. I'm guessing I'll want to use some sort of diamond tool, but I'm not sure if this would be a drill bit (step bit?) or some sort of grinding wheel for a dremel or angle grinder. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jeff

No Power Coming Out of Generator - Engine Fine

Hi - I have a Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder 5500 watt generator. Engine runs perfect, but I'm not getting any power to the outlets. So far I have tried flashing the field using a power drill, but no luck. There is a small LED that lights up the panel. It turns on when you turn the circuit breaker on, and when I ran the drill, the light got much brighter every time I turned the chuck backwards. I then went to test to see if there was any voltage going to the AVR, but turns out this unit did not have one. I don't know what to do. Trying to fix it myself if I can. Any help would be appreciated!

Considering Moving a Lollicolumn in Basement

I am considering moving a lollicolumn in my basement. I will replace/add to my current carrier beam with microlams and/or steel as necessary and recess them into the ceiling so that the ceiling joists (which currently lay on top of the carrier beam) will get tecoed in to the side of the new beam. The beam runs through the center of the house. On the main floor, there is no load (it has all been moved with microlams in previous jobs) except for the floor itself. But, dividing the room in half with the beam in the center, the kitchen is in the back half, the living room in the front half. In the kitchen, there is an island with granite and a tile floor. The kitchen doesn't sit on top of the beam--it is about 3 feet back. So, the kitchen is about 10 feet deep, and the living room, is 16 feet deep, and the beam runs through at about the 13 foot mark. So, my question is: if I recess the carrier beam in the basement, am I risking cracking my tile or the granite on the island? Assuming the job is done properly, there must be some kind of movement, right? Or not necessarily?

Lengthen Existing Wire Without Junction Box

When we built our house a few years ago the electrician ran a wire to a junction box in our basement ceiling because we thought we were going to want a floor outlet in the living room on the main level. We haven't needed it because of the way our furniture is arranged currently but may still want it in the future. I am currently finishing my basement and want to move the junction box, mentioned above, from an area that will be finished to an unfinished area. Unfortunately the wire is not long enough to reach the unfinished area. Is there an NEC approved way to lengthen wire without having it in an accessible junction box? I really don't want a random blank faceplate in my basement ceiling. Thanks for your help.

Pouring a concrete slab in old basement

Hello, I'm looking for some advice on a project I'd like to undertake in the spring/early summer this coming year. I bought an 1860's farm house, post and beam on a field stone foundation. The main section of the house has a full basement, and the later addition has a crawl space. The full basement currently has a few inches of crushed gravel on top of clay(fitting as I live on Clay st.) It is moist down there. This winter I am re-pointing the foundation and then painting it with drylock or comparable sealing paint. My goal after that is to have a concrete floor poured in. I'm planning on 4" of cement, but I'm not sure if I should remove the gravel, and pack the ground, and how I should build in a drainage system. I would think I would want some type of collecting troth around the perimeter to a sump-pump, but I don't know what products are out there, or if this would be the proper thing to do. Any advice for this project would be great! Also, this sub-forum is the only place that seemed appropriate to place this question, if it should be moved else where please do.

Recessed light clearences

Hello, I built a soffit in my basement to house some recessed lights, they are non ic recessed lights. My question is how far do they need to be away from combustible materials, I know it says to keep insulation 3" away due to over heating issues, but I wanted to make sure about other clearances. One place I want to put the light, the top of the can will sit very close to the floor joist above. I couldn't build my soffit any deeper due to matching up to an existing soffit.

Frigidaire oven aborts self cleaning cycles

What would cause a Frigidaire oven to abort a self cleaning cycle? My wife has recently tried several times to use the self cleaning cycle & after about 10 minutes or so it shuts down, no longer says "CLN" in the display, it just reverts back to clock. Normally this takes 3-4 hours & the display says "END" when it is finished. The only thing different between the last time she used it & the current non-function status is that I replaced a thermal sensor down by the oven pilot light that allows the gas valve to open. I didn't change any wiring, it was reassembled as it was prior to that part installation. I took several pictures prior to disassembly for reference. TexasFire

Nest - Solenoid on bypass humidifier not engaging - 16v output on *

Hi all, hoping someone can help. I cannot get NEST to activate the solenoid. Heat, Cool, Fan all work fine. I decided to measure the voltage for '*' from nest to 'C' on furnace terminal and get 16V. What do I need to do? Shouldn't nest be putting out 24V from '*"? --- 1. * (star) is connected to one end of the solenoid 2. Other end of the solenoid is connected to 'C' terminal at furnace. 3. 'C' is also run from the furnace to 'C' on nest.

Blower not working for heat

Hi all, I have a Carrier furnace model 58SSB with a blower control board HH84AA009. I replaced the blower motor at the beginning of summer with a unit I purchased from Grainger. The replacement went fine and the blower worked great through out the summer. Now that we have switched to heat the furnace fires up fine but with the thermostat on "auto" the blower never comes on. If I shut everything down and wait a bit I can switch the blower to "On" and it comes on. Then I can turn the heat back on and everything is fine with the exception that the blower continues to run even after the heat cycles off. Do you think I hooked something up wrong when I swapped the blower motors? I'm pretty handy with a volt meter but I'm not sure where to start testing. Thanks! Chuck

Rehabbing a staircase in place

As part of our basement project, Im going to change from carpeted to wood stairs. The way the staircase is built pretty much eliminates any chance at easily removing the existing treads and replacing them completely. The bright side is that the existing treads are painted pine 2x, so they are fairly tough. I figured I would use Retrotread to cover over them directly, or even actual stair tread material instead. As part of a different project, I had to remove the landing at the bottom of these steps, so now I have a chance to do something: the current rise of each step (except for the top step) is about 7-3/4"....basically the max height by code. Should I add a 1/4" (or thicker) "underlayment" on each tread so I can reduce the rise of each step? Once thats added I would adhere the Retrotread/regular tread to that underlayment. Since the landing is brand new, I have the ability to add enough material on top of the frame to keep the last step at the same as the others. If its worth the effort, what kind of product would I use as an underlayment? Just 1/4" (or whatever thickness) plywood? Cheap hardwood (i.e. poplar)?

Simplicity Sunstar Transmission Output Shaft

I have a Simplicity Sunstar Tractor Model # 1692135 that powers a rear 3200 RPM PTO kit. I finally found the difficulty in activating the blower. (It worked for two lawns and then wouldnt engage) The output (male) splined shaft is worn out, and the female coupling on the kit required to power the blower that has the electric clutch etc is worn out as well. I have part numbers for both of these parts, and I have to find out if I can still get them etc. I can easily replace the female coupling, but the male splined shaft is part of the hydrostat. Will the hydro have to be removed from the tractor completely to reinstall the new part, if I can get one, or is there a faster way to do this?

Replacement ceramic cartridge ...

background ... I have a tub which fills via the "overflow" and has a hand-held sprayer as well. The water temp, volume and direction (ie fill or spray) is controlled via a stand alone unit/valve/control whatever. It developed a "stem" leak - not major, but continuous. With help, I dissembled the unit and found a ceramic cartridge - the only identification on it being "SEDAL" and a date of manufacture. BTW, the valve is totally anonymous - no name/number etc anywhere. I was given an identical replacement at a Home Depot (nb in a plastic bag, not original packaging) as the unit supposedly has a lifetime warranty. This "new" cartridge leaked worse than the original ... RATS!! Finally, my question ... any suggestions as to where I can buy a new, in the box, SEDAL ceramic cartridge? I suspect that as long as the inlets/outlet line up with the holes in the valve body (and the locating pins are the same) it should work. Would silicone on the existing gasket work? (allowing 24 hours to "set" before testing, that is? Any ideas (and/or sympathy) appreciated Bob

Wow! What an odor!

This is about a very old (80 years) cast iron stove - a Glenwood Duplex - that was overhauled and converted from natural gas to propane, with new orifices. The cooktop burners work OK (so I think the regulator is properly installed and the new orifices are the proper size) but the oven is trouble. It gets to temperature OK, but it emits a powerful odor, which the top burners do not. The odor seems strongest when the oven is working on high. (There are two operational levels: high when it's bringing itself to temperature and low when it's maintaining temperature.) I've done the best I can at cleaning out the oven burner (with a vacuum cleaner), as I did with the top burners, but the oven odor persists. I've tried adjusting the air shutter in both directions but that seems not to help. Does this indicate incomplete combustion, possibly because the orifice may be the wrong size? Should I try a different orifice? With the hole larger or smaller? Could it be that the burner still has deposits of some sort inside? In which case, is there a way to clear them? Anything else I should consider?

Is there a way to lower the air temp of a duct from a wood stove

Seems like a funny title, here is what I was thinking.. This is just a little side project that I am continually working on. I have a wood furnace with a couple of its own ducts that is separate from my other ductwork. I never need to run the wood furnace and other furnace at the same time. It is okay like this but I would like to duct just alittle bit of the air from the wood furnace into a couple of my ducts that go upstairs just to circulate some more air around. The hot air from the wood furnace I feel can get too hot to send into the duct that goes up through my wall. If I take one of the 6" branches from the wood furnace, is there something I can make to introduce some room temp air in to mix with the heated air before sending it into the duct going up the wall? I was trying to think if there was a way that the room air could be pulled into the air stream in the duct, similar to how a chimney pulls air into a barometric damper. I can't think of any way it could work.

Briggs and Stratton Starter clutch

The starter clutch on my old flat head 11 hp is worn out inside. Someone put it back together with just 4 balls. Or maybe it's just worn from old age. Or the combo. The thing is. The entire mower is worth maybe 100 bucks tops. Hate to spring for a new starter clutch. My question. I have an old 3.5 hp flat head Briggs. I saved it just to part out. Any chance the starter clutches will interchange? I'm guessing no. But it's stored 15 miles away. Thought I'd ask before I made the trip or sprung for a new starter clutch. Thanks in advance.

Aprilaire 700 Vibration

Now that winter is coming to northeast Ohio my new Aprilaire 700 has started doing its job. It was professionally installed by the Carrier dealer who installed my new Infinity System in July of this year. I've noticed a vibration in the humidifier when it is running. There is no vibration when the 700 is not running so I assume that I'm dealing with an unbalanced fan shaft or blades. The Carrier dealer's work is of the highest quality and is not contributing to the vibration. Has anyone had this problem with a fan equipped humidifier? I believe that I should return it to Aprilaire for replacement. Thank you in advance for your time and any assistance provided.

Add support bracing for roof

Hi, I am going to be working in attic with insulation and while up there I am thinking of adding some extra support for my roof. It is all open in the attic right now. The size is roughly 27' long gable to gable, and 26' across. It is a standard roof with 2x6 rafters and the joists run the same direction as the rafters, although they do not all meet up evenly as the spacing on everything varies. I do have a wall in the middle of the house that has support all the way down to the basement floor. I was thinking of maybe only adding the extra support in the middle 1/3 area of the roof since the middle would be the weakest part where a heavy snow would start to collapse? Is there a usual way to go about doing this?

Where's Furd?

My last post was Sunday evening when I wrote that I was going to the hospital. Well, I thought it was just a kidney stone and I would be out Monday afternoon or Tuesday by noon at the latest. I won't bore you with the details but I didn't get out until Friday afternoon and while I am back home, at least for a while, I'm on oxygen 24/7 and have a few follow-up doctor appointments over the next few weeks. Oh, yeah, the stone is still there although the urologist was able to get a stent in place so it allows drainage. It also appears that when I told people that I had multiple medical issues I really was telling the truth. Okay, too many typos to continue, I'm going to take a nap. My sister should be here within an hour or so.

Electronic Air Filter question

Hello, I purchased a house that was fitted with a Trane XR80 furnace, which was fitted with a Sears BP1 electronic/electric (not sure as to the correct term!) furnace filter. I have been unable to find any significant information regarding this filter. I was able to order replacement pads for it, but I have been noticing that, most often, indicator LED is orange/red, and I seem to recall that that means something is not working right with the filter. Does anyone have experience with one of these or even point me in the right direction to find a manual or information myself? Thanks!

Safewatch Pro 3000 - replace broken Wireless Door/Window Transmitter

Hello experts - I have purchased a new "5816WMWH" Wireless Door/Window Transmitter to replace one that was on my back door (the most used entryway) of my house. The old device was on zone 13. Please can you advise whether I now need to un-enroll the old unit - and if so, how, then how to enroll the new unit to zone 13. Is there a way to simply overwrite the serial number or do I need to completely remove the entry in the system for the old transmitter then completely enter all the settings for the new transmitter. If I have to re-enter everything is there a way to review how the old one was setup so that I can duplicate everything (except the serial number) exactly? This is all very new to me - so please "dumb down" the answer, if at all possible! Many thanks.

Can router be ilnfected? Does reset to factory clear all?

I have been having a problem for about the last week with my internet service getting so slow it won't even pull up a page when this happens. The computers will show that I am connected to one of my routers and it will indicate internet access but I am not able to pull anything up. Even Iphone will be connected but won't go to page either. Like it times out. Here is the setup that I have. This is in my home. I have a cable modem that is supplied by TimeWarnerCablel. It has the coax cable that feeds it, from there I have an ethernet cable that runs from modem to first router which is a Netgear N router. From that router I have an ethernet cable that goes from router 1 to another router, I will call this router #2, it is also a Netgear N router, then there is an ethernet cable that runs out of router 2 and plugs into a desktop computer. When this happens I disconnect the routers from the modem and do a reset on the modem. I have 3 laptops that use the wifi and we use a ROKU to stream tv.

#6 stranded conductor doesn't fit into the hole in the neutral bar?

While trying to add a new circuit I noticed the white neutral conductor which is a #6 stranded was not fully inserted into the hole in the neutral bar. About half was in the hole and the other half "pulled back". Is this typical? I released the screw and pulled it out, cut it shorter a bit stripped the insulation, and I had a hard time pushing it into the hole as well. Is it supposed to fit? Are standard neutral bar holes big enough for the bigger conductors?

Drain slop code question. See Photo

I just plumbed in a drain for a laundry sink and clothes washer in my laundry room and I'm hoping someone can chime in and tell me if this is correct or not. The main thing that jumps out at me is the 22 degree slope of the pipe to the right. That section of pipe is about 20" long and it's the only way I could match up the interior drain line to the one I dug outside. The outside portion is 2" diameter, about 12' long at 1/4" per foot drop, and connects to a 3" drain line at the end. Another question mark is the 1.5" vent for the two 2" drains that drain the sink and washer. Any help appreciated. *the 1.5" vent is abs as well, but it's painted white in this photo. *the y tee in the photo is for a washing machine and a condensate drain for a natural gas heating system yet to be in place. Floor insullation.

I purchased a 1978 DBL Wide and need to replace the sub-floors in the kitchen and dining room. When I pulled up the sub-floor I found the - I think its called a Belly Pan, not sure though - insullation is located under the joists, 2x8, leaving a cavity between the insullation and the sub-floor. Should I lay in new insullation, there by filling the void, and should the kraft paper backing go towards the floor or the other insulation, and should I then put a vapor barrier across the joists. Primer mistake on kitchen cabinets!!!

Been remodeling my house for 16 months and finally about a week away from completing the kitchen. For the last few days I've been priming the drawers and doors and about half way done with the final coats, glazing, and poly. This afternoon I walked in to get the can of primer from the my painting area and noticed it was still sealed. My heart dropped to the floor!!!! I HAD GRABBED THE WRONG CAN when I started priming. I accidentally used a latex primer instead of the oil base. I'm literally sick to my stomach because I've worked hard on this thing and we're not talking a small kitchen. There's 50 drawers and doors. Here's the steps I've done to the finished doors; 1. Primer (latex) <--- Oh My Gawd! 2. Antique white (oil base) 2 coats 3. Glazed with black stain (oil base) 4. Poly finish satin (oil base) How bad did I just screw up???????

Lady Kenmore dryer heats but doesn't tumble

I have a Lady Kenmore dryer model 110.96094100 that heats up but doesn't tumble. It use to be if I gave it a Fonzi shot near the top of the dryer, it would start. Should I return Kenmore washing machine I just bought???

Ok, here is the deal. I bought a new Kenmore top load washing machine a couple of days ago. It is model #25132. Here is the Sears link to it. Sears.com (http://www.sears.com/kenmore-4.3-cu-ft-top-load-washer-w/p-02625132000P?prdNo=5&blockNo=5&blockType=G5) I ran the first load of clothes through it and it is what I consider very noisy. When it goes through any agitation movement it sounds like metal rubbing together. Now I have not bought a washer in about 20 years and have just been repairing my old Kenmore whenever it broke. I would be surprised to know that this is a normal noise for a new washing machine. It would seem to me that a newer designed machine would be quieter not louder. There is a Service Tech coming this morning to look at it and tell me if the sound is normal or if something is wrong with it. My question to you guys is this. Should I stick with this model or should I just return it and get a different model? I am leaning toward returning it and getting a different model no matter what the service guy tells me. Here is my thinking. If he says the noise is normal then it is too loud for what I want. If he says that something is wrong with it and suggests that I exchange it for another just like it then am I just getting a washer that is not a good choice and is going to fail in a couple of years? I am looking at returning it and giving the GE top loader model number GTWN4250DWS a try. Here is the link to that one.

Help with Hydraulics

OK, I have no idea WHAT forum this pertains to... This was the closest, although I'm sure it will get moved! I have a hydraulic barber chair, that suddenly isn't "holding" in the fully raised position. It will pump up, but sllloooowwwwlllllly drop back to the lowest position. It takes about ten or 15 minutes to drop; if you pump it up and sit in it, it seems fine. My initial diagosis was that it needed hydraulic jack oil. I lifted the plate that covers the pedestal (snapping the head off the bolt when putting it back... grrrrr). I saw a bolt that looked like it might be covering a reservoir, and two bolts covering what I guess is the brake plate. I would think that wherever one added fluid should have somewhat easy maintenance access, but I can't find anyplace else.

New Closed System Summary

First of all I would like to thank NJ Trooper and HO Heating for helping me with wiring my new boiler. It seems to be working flawless. Since I'm a novice to hydronics I thought I would give everyone and overview of my first system and see if some of you might have any inputs to help me make it work efficiently. I'm heating a 1150 square foot, 3 stall garage and a 200 square foot breezeway on 2 separate zones. Each zone has it's own circulator. I'm using an HTP MC-50 boiler piped with 1" copper feeding a 1" Caleffi 4 loop manifold. Each loop is a little over 250 feet of 1/2 pex tubing. My breezeway loop I have branching from the main 1" line to another circulator where I have it reduced to 3/4" and then have it reduced down to 1/2' pex. I do not have a flow meter on this line. My intentions were to install a clamp on temperature gauge to my incoming and outgoing lines and vary my flow with my isolation valve on my circulator if necessary. This loop is extremely short compared to the garage loops. Less than 100 feet. My location is north central Iowa. Garage floor is a 5" concrete slab with 2" foam inside footings to within a 1/2" of the top of the floor and 2" under slab with a moisture barrier. R-19 walls and 19" of blow insulation in the ceiling.

To get right into it.The transformer burned out in the furnace.I called a service company out. They replaced the transformer and instantly it burnt out he tested the system and everything checked out.He called his boss and said it sounded like a neutral problem in my electrical somewhere, either in the box or out at the road.AEP electrical supply company said everything from the house out to the street check out ok.So called a another HVAC guy.I really liked this guy,Honest and upfront. He thought what the other company said was crazy. He installed another transformer and it burned up quickly. He bypassed the outside air unit and tried again and again burned up(5 Transformers!!!).He did a through check of everything as far as i could tell. The crazy thing is,He always has an inline fuse and it never reads over 0.8 amps,BUt it still burns up!I feel this guy is good and has been doing this 22 years and said hes never ran into this situation! The only thing that i have done recently is change out a light fixture, and the wiring was oddly set up,wires split off and went up stairs and it did take me a while to get it wired correctly but when i did the light worked fine.2 days later i get a call saying the heat was out.Could the wiring have anything to do with the transformer burning up?I do know that the Furnace is on its own breaker. Please any suggestions or any thoughts would be great full. Its like 40 degrees in the house and its a rental!

TH115 AF vs Tekmar 519

Hi, group! Installing suspended tube floor radiant upgrade in a sun room. Concerned that significant solar gains will overheat the room, but cutting the floor heat off entirely will leave it too cool to catch up at sunset. Looks to me like these thermostats will maintain a minimum floor heat even after the ambient T is satisfied. I am really impressed with the features on the Honeywell TH115 AF 024T and the Tekmar 519. I read about the Tekmar first, and it seems like exactly what I want; then saw the Honeywell which seems to be very similar, but includes 7-day program. I prefer the smaller simpler display on the Tekmar, but with the Honeywell running $23 less it seems like the better choice. Perhaps the Tekmar is higher cuz their probe is designed for slab immersion, while the Honeywell is just everyday. There is a big difference in the probe prices when sold separately. T'stat will go to a TACO SVC404-4 to control a Taco Z075T-2 zone valve. Anybody have a hands on comparison between the 2? Any opinions based on brand name? PS no A/C in the house. just oil-fired hot water radiators.

service disconnect - portable generator?

I have a small 1000w portable generator I use when power is out, it has a 220v plug I could plug into a 220 outlet. The panel in the house is a 200 amp HOM40M200C, it is less than 5 feet from where the Power comes into the house. It has a 200 amp breaker at the top of the panel. Do I need a separate disconnect for the service to plug in the generator when the power is out? Can I just turn off the service at the panel? Is that safe enough when the power is restored? If not what kind of disconnect would I need to install?

What is the correct name for this?

I'm trying to find the proper name for what we called a "double ender" (which can't be the proper name (??). It is a metal "bolt", with wood screw threads on one end , and "regular" threading on the other end to put hex nuts, washers, etc. I may need them to attach a a cover to framing members ( using the wood screw threads), but have the cover be removable -thus the "regular" threading. (the wood screw threadings holds the "bolt" in place, and the regular threads with hex nuts/washers etc. holds the cover.) Thanks in advance.

Finishing the back of a lean to shed

I am planning a lean to shed for my pool area that will be against a brick veneer on my garage. How do I finish the part that is against the brick? I am thinking of using sheathing covered by tar paper and then fencing to make the shed blend in with the fence. Also, what is the minimum angle that should be on the roof. I need all the room I can in the shed. Thanks.

2008 Chevy Silverado WT - Cruse Control

Just began noticing a problem with the Cruse Control on my company truck . It seems the Cruse Control will not function in the morning , when everything is cold . Latter on , when the interior warms up , it will start working & will continue to do so , for the remainder of the day . My first guess is that the fault is in the controls on the steering wheel ? Anyone having a pdf of the wiring diagram for the Cruse Control , I would be grateful . Thanks , :-) Wyr God bless

ZWave Smoke detector with Simon XT + Alarm.com

Is there a way to make this work? I added a First Alert Z-Wave CO/Smoke detector to my Simon XT panel but I don't know what to do now so that the Simon XT sends me an alert to my phone/email. I am subscribed to LiveWatch/Alarm.com and the CO/Smoke detector appears in the Alarm.com page as a Z-Wave device. I contacted their tech support via email and they gave me an amazing answer: "I have never dealt with the z-wave smoke detectors so I don't know how they function with Alarm.com".... LOL! Are you kidding? What kind of answer is that? Aren't you supposed to figure out what you don't know and get back to me? Anyway, I set the smoke detector off using a candle and all I got was a lot of beeping from the smoke detector but nothing from the Simon XT panel or any alerts on my phone. Any help with this is appreciated.

Moving dryer (and venting) to opposite side of room??? (PIC)

I'm looking to move my dryer next to my washer. If you look at the pic below, you'll see the washer bottom left and the dryer at the end of the room. Right behind the dryer is the vent outlet to the outdoor. I'm wondering if I can simply move the dryer next to the sink by the washer? My thinking was to run the venting straight up and then along the water piping that runs straight down that back wall, finally over to the right and out the same outlet? Any input on my options would be greatly appreciated. electrical fire rewire

We just bought a house that has had a small electrical fire. I plan on calling an electrician to do the work but im looking to get a little more information before I go that route. The wall has been exposed where the fire has started. Im assuming partially due to the fire itself and when the fire department came and inspected. It took place on a step landing going to the second story. Will I just need that line rewired? Im not sure of code but i was told that I can still have the older wiring as long as its in good condition. Obviously some of it is not. Would i need the whole house rewired? and at a rough guess how much is that going to cost?

need help with venting...

Hello there and thank you for reading. I have a Perfection Schwank 1988 model radiant space heater. 70k btu, model number WVRC270CTN-0. I obtained the unit for free, and was told that it works. The unit had a 6'' 90 coming off the back, appears to be galvanized. My question is this: what kind of chimney should this unit vent with, and is it worth hooking up? I'm wanting to put it in my unfinished basement/garage. I've had no luck fishing around on the internet for any information as to how this unit is supposed to be vented, and have never seen anything vented in single wall. Just trying to get heat down here as cheaply as possible lol :) Any advice is appreciated!

And they giving me a option to have a inspection done for additional $250. So my question is should I pay for the inspection? is it worth it? I am still getting updated information how much they will pay for a new unit. so will update that soon. and if any of you have any more information how the insurance handles this kind of situation, any tips would be great. Specially since they love making money.
