Repairing the shower 90 degree elbow

Hey all, While removing the shower head arm for a replacement shower, even with taking care to not bend it at odd angles, it still broke off. I found the file method described here (http://www.doityourself.com/forum/plumbing-piping/196891-removing-broken-shower-head-extension-pipe-elbow.html), but unfortunately it did not work for me (partially due to my stupidity), and I wound up with the pipe still quite firmly stuck in there. Several rounds of cutting and excavating later using 'techniques' that are not too far off from laparoscopic, and I'm at the point where it looks like I may have to be replacing it. I thought I'd check in to see if anyone happens to have some advice on the matter, or if I have to resign myself to removing the tile, the board behind it, desolder the thing, solder on a new one, reconstruct the wall, etc. Having never done that sort of thing is a bit daunting. Thanks!
